Kaimuki junior QB Jayden Maiava heading to Elite 11

By Paul Honda on October 12, 2020

The Elite 11 regional in Portland, Ore. is not common territory. When Tua Tagovailoa of Saint Louis went to his first Elite 11, the competition with top quarterbacks from across the region, then the West Coast, then nationally, put him on the biggest radar. Jayden Maiava of Kaimuki is hoping to expand his scope. The 6-foot-5, 222-pound junior will travel to the Oct. 25 event with Campbell junior Blaine Hipa. Their personal coach, Keli‘i Tilton, will accompany them. “The exciting […]

Campbell DB, Hawaii commit Peter Manuma fueled daily by vaifala power

By Paul Honda on October 12, 2020

Peter Manuma says he is stronger, even two inches taller today because of vaifala. Manuma is on his way to the Polynesian Bowl in January, and if the timing proceeds as expected, it will be the first on-field football game action for the Campbell senior since last season. The game is still expected to be played on Jan. 23, 2021, which would probably be before the start of the Hawaii high school football season. “It’s truly an honor, a big […]

ON THIS DATE IN 1990: Mark Atuaia and Randall Okimoto face off

By Jerry Campany on October 12, 2020

On this date in 1990, Mark Atuaia rushed for 228 yards on 24 carries and Kahuku beat Farrington 26-14 at Aloha Stadium. The Red Raiders won the battle of unbeatens mostly because Farrington coach Skippa Diaz stubbornly double-teamed Kahuku end Itula Mili, who was held without a catch. Atuaia didn’t carry the ball until seven minutes into the game and was thrown for losses three times in the first half. Farrington running back Randall Okimoto had 111 yards on 21 […]

Campbell was 6-6 in the Open Division last season, losing to Kahuku in the state semifinals, 21-19. Hipa passed for 2,582 yards and 31 touchdowns as a sophomore. Another […]

By Jerry Campany on October 11, 2020

Hawaii’s leader in career passing yards had less than a year to enjoy the accomplishment. On this date in 1986, former Punahou quarterback Shawn Akina died in Salt Lake City. He was 19. Akina was the first prep quarterback in Hawaii history to throw for 1,000 yards as a sophomore and closed his prep career with a state record 5,025. Saint Louis coach Cal Lee called him “the best pure passer we ever saw.” Ferd Lewis of the Honolulu Advertiser […]

By Paul Honda on October 10, 2020

The road as a coach has been peaks and valleys for Keith Spencer, but this stop will be tough to top. Damien hired the former Leilehua and Saint Louis boys basketball coach, replacing Alvin Stephenson. The Monarchs won a Division II state title under Stephenson in 2018, then moved up to D-I and reached the D-I state tourney. Stephenson stepped down after last season. “I’m excited to come back and coach at the high school level again,” Spencer said. The […]

By Jerry Campany on October 10, 2020

On this date in 2003, Mililani traveled to Waianae and did its best impression of Searider football. The Trojans dominated time of possession — usually Waianae’s forte — to leave the West side with a key 27-20 victory and control of the OIA Red West. Peter Ranses led the Trojans with 97 yards rushing and quarterback Maka Kahoano threw for 167 yards, 90 of them on seven catches by Darren Smith. Mililani improved to 7-0 and won its next two […]
