By Paul Honda on October 10, 2020

Baseball has been very, very good to Aiva Arquette. When the two-sport standout wasn’t firing up jump shots with Coach Derrick Low during the summer, Arquette was getting constant reps on the diamond. The 6-foot-3 junior added some game action to his offseason calendar, socking a home run with Team Hawaii at the Arizona Junior Fall Classic. Junior Fall Classic 2020. Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, this is quite the strangest of times for Mark Arquero to become a varsity basketball coach. Damien announced Arquero as the new coach on Friday. “I’m very excited. I’ve been waiting to do something like this for a while now,” Arquero said on Friday. “I’m proud to be an alumni. ON THIS DATE IN 1948: William Heilbron’s speed leads to Punahou upset

By Jerry Campany on October 9, 2020

On this date in 1948, Punahou pulled off another upset. The Buffablu, who were expected to be bottom feeders in preseason dope after losing a large senior class, rode a stifling defense and the speed of William Heilbron to upset heavily favored Kamehameha 6-0 in front of a crowd of 18,000. It was Punahou’s third straight victory. Although the victory made the Buffanblu the team to beat, Kamehameha came back to win the league title. But for one day, the […]

‘Iolani fireballer Zacary Tenn is smokin’ hot in Arizona

By Paul Honda on October 9, 2020

It was smokin’ hot in Arizona last weekend, and the weather was a scorcher, too. ‘Iolani right-hander Zacary Tenn provided the heat at the Arizona Junior Fall Classic. The junior brought a fastball timed at 87 mph to help TB SoCal, coached by Benny Bonilla and Ryan Thompson. “My favorite highlight was just being able to pitch because back home, we haven’t had any games in a while,” said Tenn, who will also pitch in the Arizona Senior Fall Classic […]

The right-hander got some action at the Hawaii Sandlot Classic in August. Last weekend, he played with Team Hawaii in the HeadFirst Academic Showcase and Junior Fall Classic. In the Fall Classic, he was 4-for-5 at the plate with two walks and was hit by pitch once. He pitched […]

Fueling the fire: Chanelle Molina’s dream in progress

By Paul Honda on October 8, 2020

She was projected as a second- or third-round selection in the WNBA 2020 Draft. Instead, guard Chanelle Molina was bypassed despite being a potential target by league powerhouse Connecticut. “After the draft, I was motivated more than ever and disappointed at the same time. A little bump in the road just means another route I have to take to the WNBA. That’s what God planned for me. My mentality is get better every day and do what I can,” she […]

Grandfather, little brother on trip of lifetime for Beau Sylvester

By Paul Honda on October 7, 2020

Beau Sylvester knows the long way around the baseball diamond well. That’s why a road trip with his 6-year-old brother, Gage, and 77-year-old grandfather, Jim, was the sweet spot of all journeys this fall. Sylvester, an outfielder-catcher at Kamehameha, gave his support crew a thrill or two for the generations. He hit a home run and threw out a baserunner from the outfield, and finished 4-for-6 at the plate during Arizona Junior Fall Classic play with his teams, Team Hawaii […]
