By Jerry Campany on October 22, 2020

On this date in 1928, William Centeio of McKinley paid the price for raising a few too many eyebrows. Centeio recovered three fumbles to lead the Tigers over Saint Louis 7-6 three days before. The Crusaders were tipped off that Centeio, who had been playing for the Tigers for years and was still a student at the public school, was older than the league mandated 21. Saint Louis protested the victory and ordered it overturned but lost that plea. The […]

ON THIS DATE IN 1975: Tom Tuinei saves the day for Waianae

By Jerry Campany on October 19, 2020

Waianae’s 6-4, 240-pound Tom Tuinei was often considered too big to be a linebacker, so he was certainly too big to be a safety. Tuinei proved all of that wrong on this date in 1975, picking off a pass late in the game to lead Waianae to a 7-0 win over Waipahu at Aloha Stadium. Tuinei intercepted three of Scott Chan‘s passes the previous week. His running mate was Eliu Wilson, and the pair combined to make up one of […]
