ON THIS DATE IN 1975: Tom Tuinei saves the day for Waianae

Waianae’s 6-4, 240-pound Tom Tuinei was often considered too big to be a linebacker, so he was certainly too big to be a safety.

Tuinei proved all of that wrong on this date in 1975, picking off a pass late in the game to lead Waianae to a 7-0 win over Waipahu at Aloha Stadium.

Tuinei intercepted three of Scott Chan‘s passes the previous week. His running mate was Eliu Wilson, and the pair combined to make up one of the best defenses ever.

The Seariders went 12-0 with six shutouts before losing to Kamehameha in the Prep Bowl.
