McKinley Tigers dreaming of on-campus football stadium

By Paul Honda on October 27, 2020

Roosevelt, Kaiser, Moanalua, Radford. Most city schools of Honolulu have on-campus stadiums for football, soccer and track and field. Farrington dedicated its stadium in 2017. McKinley, which began as Fort Street English Day School in 1865, hopes to be next. McKinley is one of the few high schools left in Hawaii that doesn’t have lights on its football/soccer field. There are no bleachers for Tiger fans and visiting spectators, either. That could change. The school hopes to begin moving forward […]

ON THIS DATE IN 1945: Tom Carpenter and Punahou make Roosevelt pay

By Jerry Campany on October 26, 2020

You probably could hear the collective gasp in the press box by Hawaii scribes Joe Anzivino and Bill Kim. On this date in 1945, Roosevelt coach Neil “Cocky” Donahue spit in the face of conventional wisdom and ordered his quarterback to throw the ball despite a 13-7 lead with less than five minutes to play. Both sportswriters blasted the decision after Peter Wilson picked off Roy Rosa‘s pass to give the Buffanblu the ball at Roosevelt’s 11-yard line. Wilson scored […]

By Paul Honda on October 25, 2020

In a perfect world, Cameron Friel would be quarterbacking Kailua into the playoffs by now. In this pandemic world, Friel won’t play another down for the Surfriders. The senior will graduate early from Kailua and enroll at UNLV in January, getting an early start to his college football career. “It’s something I’ve been deciding ever since I committed,” said Friel, who gave the Rebels his oral commitment on May 18. “It wasn’t a for-sure thing until recently.” Friel also has […]

Erika Davenport had 21 points and 14 rebounds, and Camille Zimmerman tallied 17 points. The Dolphins improved to 3-1 in the Swedish Basketball League standings. When coast clears, ILH prepared for multiple comeback scenarios

By Paul Honda on October 24, 2020

In a perfect setting during a global pandemic, high school sports resume in January. Football, wrestling and competitive cheer, the “higher-risk” sports as defined by the National Federation of High Schools, are a long way from returning. Hawaii requires that a “Tier 4” status before organized sports return, with the current exception of UH football. “How would or could school administration justify playing sports and not having their students in person (on campus),” ‘Iolani co-Athletic Director and football coach Wendell […]

Punahou defender, West Point-bound Jordan Lau on the run

By Paul Honda on October 23, 2020

“Terminator.” “Half woman, half animal.” That’s how Hawaii Surf soccer club coach Shawn Kuroda describes his devastating center back, Jordan Lau. Kuroda has leaned on the Punahou senior for many good reasons. The center back has been the backbone of Punahou’s defense, and in the offseason, she does the same for the Surf. “Jordan is different. I have to tell our kids to stay away from her when they see her coming,” Kuroda said on Friday. “I depend on her […]

ON THIS DATE IN 1982: Waianae picks off 10 Pearl City passes

By Jerry Campany on October 23, 2020

On this date in 1982, Pearl City Sandy Obra just absolutely refused to give up. Obra directed his quarterbacks to put up 42 passes but Waianae stole 10 of them in a 41-7 victory for the Seariders in front of 3,966 at Aloha Stadium. The 10 picks set an OIA record established by Kahuku against Farrington way back in 1973. Pearl City quarterback Kamaki Alejado entered the game as the division’s leading passer and had thrown only five interceptions in […]
