Freshman Hipa starts at QB for Campbell

By Nick Abramo on November 2, 2018

Surprise: the quarterback for the No. 5 Campbell Sabers in their OIA Open Division third-place game against Farrington tonight was not senior Krenston Kaipo nor senior Kaniala Kalaola. Instead, freshman Blaine Hipa got the call to start, and he led the Sabers to touchdowns on their first two drives. He connected with Pokii Adkins-Kupukaa for 27 yards before Sky Lactaoen scored on a 17-yard run. Kaipo, a 5-foot-9, 220-pounder, has thrown for 1,287 yards and 13 TDs this season, but […]

Govs, Sabers battle for a state berth

By Jerry Campany on November 2, 2018

Darren Johnson and the Campbell Sabers certainly didn’t want to play on the undercard of OIA Open championship night, but since they are here there is a matter of redemption to take care of. The Sabers lost to Waianae in overtime in the OIA’s third-place game last year, robbing them a trip to the state tournament in Johnson’s first year in Ewa. Should Campbell lose to Farrington this time, the Sabers would be the first program to lose the game […]

The rematch between fifth-ranked Kahuku and fourth-ranked Campbell turned out much differently in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Open Division semifinals. The Red Raiders sacked Campbell quarterback Kaniela Kalaola four times and turned two interceptions into touchdowns by Peter John Mataira and Ilaesa Fotu in the second quarter en route to a 27-7 victory.

Round 2: Campbell gets Kahuku again

By Nick Abramo on October 20, 2018

No. 4 Campbell only lost one OIA Open game this season and it was to third-ranked Mililani. You can bet Sabers coach Darren Johnson, whose team is red hot right now, wants another chance at those Trojans, who went 5-0 for a first-place league finish. To get the possibility of another shot at Mililani, the Sabers (7-3, 4-1) would have to beat No. 5 Kahuku (6-3, 3-2) in the OIA Open semifinals at home next weekend. It would be the […]

Campbell defense has first shutout

By Paul Honda on October 13, 2018

These cats have known their share of bumps and bruises. Losing linebacker Tyrese Tafai to another shoulder injury could have devastated Campbell’s defensive unit. But as the talented junior underwent surgery earlier in the week, his teammates found their second wind. Just seven days after a rejuvenating 28-27 win over Kahuku, No. 4 Campbell went to Kapolei and shut out the Hurricanes 28-0 on Saturday night. “The defense threw its first shutout. Our defensive coaches did a great job,” Campbell […]
