Kahuku follows blueprint, gets heartbroken

By Paul Honda on October 7, 2018

A stunning 28-27 win by No. 6 Campbell over No. 4 Kahuku defied all logic. After all, Kahuku owned time of possession, controlled the line of scrimmage, and operated its game plan to near perfection. Big Red ran the ball 52 times for 213 yards, often out of their patented elephant formation with Wes Alo-Maiava (77 rushing yards before injury) and Zealand Matagi (102 yards) as wildcat QBs. In all, Kahuku had 67 plays from scrimmage. Campbell had 38 snaps […]

Clutch adjustment keys Campbell’s upset of Kahuku

By Paul Honda on October 7, 2018

Kawe Johnson has always had a knack for excellence. He also had the clutch gene as a two-way standout at Kahuku, becoming the Star-Advertiser defensive player of the year as a senior. On Saturday night, it was Johnson’s ability to analyze, and then communicate with his offensive unit at Campbell that showed that he hasn’t lost that gift. Now offensive coordinator at Campbell, Johnson called a timeout in the final minute and made a key adjustment. Because of Campbell’s clutch […]

VIDEO: No. 1 Saint Louis justifies national ranking

By Paul Honda on October 1, 2018

Campbell’s homecoming night on Friday included a matchup with nationally-ranked Saint Louis, which was coming off its second consecutive win by less than 10 points. The Crusaders rolled the Sabers 55-7 to remain No. 11 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 and No. 17 in the USA Today Super 25 this week. Highlights of the win over the Sabers are below.

3 defensive TDs power No. 1 Crusaders over Sabers

By Paul Honda on September 29, 2018

The top-ranked Saint Louis Crusaders are nearly impeccable. Offense. Defense. Special teams. Offseason reps. Video. It was more of the same quest for perfection in a first-time meeting with Campbell on Friday night. Saint Louis left with a 55-7 runaway, a game that was in running-clock, mercy-rule mode for the entire second half. “We focused on taking their run game. In film study, they did the same run blocking, downfield blocking, as Waianae,” said linebacker Lawai Brown, who had the […]
