The other three seeded teams are No. 2 Moanalua, No. 3 Kamehameha-Hawaii and No. 4 King Kekaulike. In Division II, another ILH champion, Hawaii Baptist, earned the top seed. The state championships run Thursday through Friday, with the D-I and D-II finals on Friday at Blaisdell Arena. Here is the Division I bracket: http://bit.ly/1Z4Jlbb […]

Don’t remind Cabanting of past state finishes

By Nick Abramo on April 29, 2016

Six Oahu Interscholastic Association championships in a row is quite impressive, but it’s not the whole ball of wax that every volleyball player in the league dreams about. The state tournament is next week for Moanalua Na Menehune, who earned that sixth straight league title in a four-set victory over previously undefeated Mililani at the Radford gym Thursday night. “Don’t remind me,” said Moanalua head coach Alan Cabanting, when asked how far Na Menehune (14-0) has made it in the […]

OIA boys volleyball playoff matchups set

By Hawaii Prep World on April 12, 2016

The OIA boys volleyball playoffs are set after the conclusion of the regular season on Tuesday night. The top two byes in each league were already clinched last week with Moanalua (11-0) and Kahuku (10-1) earning the top seeds in the East and Mililani (10-0) and Waipahu (9-1) claiming the first-round byes from the West. McKinley and Kalani both lost on Tuesday and finished tied for third place at 7-4, but the Tigers earned the head-to-head nod with a sweep […]

Punahou sparkles in comeback Clash

By Nick Abramo on April 10, 2016

Defeat was all but certain, yet Punahou found a way to come back and beat Mira Costa on Saturday in the Clash of the Titans boys volleyball tournament. As a result, the Buffanblu took a 5-4 lead against the Mustangs in the nine years the tournament has been held since 2008. When Jackson Wedbush thundered a kill for Mira Costa’s 25-20 third-set victory for a 2-1 match lead, the logical conclusion to those who don’t have a stake in it […]

Kamehameha-Hawaii takes aim again

By Nick Abramo on April 9, 2016

Kamehameha-Hawaii’s boys volleyball team didn’t play against Punahou this weekend in the Clash of the Titans tournament. Ahhhh … but they did go to Punahou, where the tournament is held and got a close-hand look at the team that has been standing in the way of a state championship for a long, long time now. Kamehameha-Hawaii is, once again, taking aim at the top in Hawaii, but that climb to the mountain goes through the Buffanblu, just about no matter […]

Punahou high on experience, depth, togetherness

By Nick Abramo on April 8, 2016

Punahou has won four state Division I boys volleyball championships in a row, and the way the Buffanblu looked on Thursday against Kamehameha, it could easily become five in a row. That may be a little too early, since they’ve got to finish up the Interscholastic League of Honolulu season. The Buffanblu (10-0), for most of the 25-16, 25-20 victory, were in control and in system, making it very difficult for Kamehameha to mount an offense. Two setters, Todd Gruebner […]

Kamehameha takes KS Cup

By Jerry Campany on April 2, 2016

The Kamehameha boys volleyball team has been up and down all season. Saturday certainly counts as a good day. The Warriors beat Hawaii Baptist 25-19, 27-25 to capture the KS Cup in their own gym, beating a stacked field that included KS-Hawaii and three California schools. George Kailiwai’s kill put the Warriors at match point at 24-22 in Set 2. HBA rallied to tie it at 24 after Miller’s kill and Kellen Takatsuka’s third ace of the match. Nicolas Caballes’ […]

Hawaii vs. Calif. at Kapalama Cup

By Jerry Campany on March 29, 2016

Three of Hawaii’s best teams will face off with three California powers in this week’s Kapalama Cup on the Kamehameha campus. The host Warriors share a pool with Fountain Valley and Santa Barbara. Kamehameha-Hawaii and Hawaii Baptist are in the other pool with Edison of Huntington Beach, Calif. The tournament begins on Thursday with Fountain Valley playing Santa Barbara at 5 p.m. and Edison meeting Hawaii Baptist on the other court. The Eagles play Kamehameha-Hawaii after that with KSH and […]
