Big Dance endeth: Post-tourney thoughts

By Paul Honda on February 26, 2012

.   It’s 1:35 a.m., I got done with 12 hours of coverage (video, reporting, photos) at the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships and, after a late-night dinner, I’m officially fried brains. It’s a nice, happy kind of fatigue, though. It’s not like I’m a hoops glutton, no way, not even with me finally home and watching the NBA All-Star Saturday skills challenge off the DVR. I have to say this (and a few other things): the Division […]

KS-Hawaii: Stomach virus?

By Paul Honda on February 24, 2012

Well, the semifinals are done in the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships. Kahuku rallied from 10 down to beat Kamehameha-Hawaii, which not only came to the game worn out by illness, but lost captain and point guard Lanaki Apele on a freakish accident, a collision with Mekeli Fiso that led to a dislocated left elbow. But going back to the illnesses, coach Dominic Pacheco and player Shaun Kagawa confirmed tonight that Kagawa was ill last night after the Warriors’ […]

KS-Hawaii food poisoning before semifinals

By Paul Honda on February 24, 2012

Hard to believe something like this could happen, but it has. The Kamehameha-Hawaii basketball team has suffered from food poisoning since late last night after a post-game meal, which followed a 39-37 overtime win over AOP. See the breaking story on our home page here. I had a case of food poisoning and dehydration last summer. It was awful. I came home, felt extremely tired (mid-day), took a nap, got up and was throwing up and had diarrhea non-stop. Then […]

By Jerry Campany on February 23, 2012

(Here’s the extended version of today’s preview for the Division II bracket of the boys basketball state tourney.)  This is the land of mystery and intrigue. It’s not the old set for “Lost” or the Bermuda Triangle. This is the Division II bracket of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships, where the top seed gets no opening-round bye and any underdog could end up taking the Big Dance. “There’s so much parity that anything can happen. Any one of […]

Boys hoops: D-I state preview

By Paul Honda on February 22, 2012

(Here’s the extended-length version of this morning’s preview of the Division I bracket in the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships.) The big blue mountain awaits any basketball team seeking to upset top-seeded Punahou. DeForest Buckner, a 6-foot-7, 250-pound senior, is the difference between the Buffanblu being a very good team or a great team. Without him, Punahou sustained its only loss during the regular season. With him, no opponent can score and rebound at the rim against Buckner, who […]

Moanalua: home game at Farrington

By Paul Honda on February 7, 2012

The upside of hosting the first rounds of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships are numerous, but there are sacrifices to be made. There’s the need for volunteers and staff to man the front door, concession stand and parking lot. It’s thankless work that folks do simply out of the joy and goodness they feel for their schools. But for Moanalua, it got a little complicated. Tonight is the opening night of the state tourney, which coincides with the […]
