HIADA, day 1

By Jerry Campany on June 7, 2012

LIHUE — This is the Kauai Marriott Resort, loaded with lush foliage. Bromeliads everywhere. Prominently rising to the sky are 30-foot columns fitting for an emperor or two. A family of nene goose rest comfortably in on the lawn fronting a helicopter rental shop, not far from man-made streams filled with koi. And somewhere, in this mansion-esque setting, the state’s athletic directors have convened to start their annual conference. When the Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association event is done by […]

By Paul Honda on April 3, 2012

(More on the All-State Fab 15 selections that were published in Sunday’s Star-Advertiser.) DeForest Buckner wasn’t surprised by the coaches and media’s selection of Punahou’s Darren Matsuda as all-state coach of the year. “He’s the same, still using some plays we had in club basketball (Honolulu Sharks). That’s how we had a lot of success. A lot of us played for the Sharks and we were used to playing with each other. We had the chemistry,” Buckner said. ‘Iolani coach […]

New gen champs: Kalaheo not done quite yet

By Paul Honda on February 27, 2012

Forty wins and a state championship look better than good on the basketball resume. What can Kalaheo possibly do to top that next year? Coach Alika Smith’s squad went 40-6 overall this year, and long before it was news that the Mustangs were going to rock the Oahu Interscholastic Association, they were doing damage in offseason leagues. Josh Ko, the Division II state tournament’s most outstanding player, was prolific in the summer and fall leagues while playing for his […]

Class personified: Bears, Warriors honor Apele

By Paul Honda on February 26, 2012

When Kamehameha-Hawaii assistant coach Todd Yanagi approached Baldwin’s bench minutes before their third-place game, Bears coach Wayne Gushiken had a slightly surprised look. The longtime coach had seen and heard it all, pretty much, in high school hoops. But this was something new, and when Yanagi was done explaining, Gushiken smiled and nodded. It was a fitting proposal. Yanagi asked the veteran Baldwin coach to allow Warrirors guard Lanaki Apele, who had suffered a season-ending elbow injury the night before […]
