KS-Hawaii: Stomach virus?

Well, the semifinals are done in the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships.

Kahuku rallied from 10 down to beat Kamehameha-Hawaii, which not only came to the game worn out by illness, but lost captain and point guard Lanaki Apele on a freakish accident, a collision with Mekeli Fiso that led to a dislocated left elbow.

But going back to the illnesses, coach Dominic Pacheco and player Shaun Kagawa confirmed tonight that Kagawa was ill last night after the Warriors’ win over AOP on Thursday night. He was vomiting before they got to a restaurant, and he didn’t even eat.

So that rules out food poisoning (in almost all possible scenarios). Coach Pacheco thought it might have been food poisoning, but that was before he learned that Kagawa got sick before the post-game meal.

It doesn’t change the miserable night and day the Warriors endured, with several in sick bay (Kamehameha-Kapalama on-campus clinic), then most of the players feeling sick all day. That meant no eating.

Note for the weary: use hand sanitizer and get plenty of rest. A bug is going around — even Kahuku guard Kawe Johnson said he’s sick — and this is simply the worst possible time to fall ill.
