Two have already been settled: Huipu (China) took the Walter Wong Invitational and Lahainaluna defeated Chestermere (Canada) in the St. Francis Holiday Hoops final. Top-ranked Punahou hosts No. 4 Kalaheo in the final of the Punahou Invitational tonight at Hemmeter Fieldhouse. End Q1: Kalaheo 12, Punahou 8 The Buffanblu started slow, but drive-and-dish plays by guards Dayson Watanabe and Jordan Tanuvasa against Kalaheo’s man defense were just too easy. The Mustangs are […]

Huipu claims Walter Wong title

By Paul Honda on December 30, 2014

Eastern China isn’t exactly a short distance from the Hawaiian Islands, but Huipu made themselves quite comfortable in Honolulu. The team from Zhejiang, China pulled away in the second half for a 69-32 win over Damien to capture the title at the Walter Wong Invitational on Tuesday night at McCabe Gymnasium. Huipu won all four of its games over a five-day span, and even with their 6-foot-9 and 6-8 bigs fatigued, in foul trouble or a combination of both, their […]

With their two big men sitting the bench for most of the second half and all of OT, Huipu of Zhejiang, China eked out a 70-66 win over Leilehua on Monday afternoon at the Walter Wong Invitational. It was a gritty, spirited effort by the Mules, who connected on […]

Saturday Evening Post: Govs stymie Spartans

By Paul Honda on December 27, 2014

All is well in the post for Farrington, even though they don’t have the bigs they had a year ago (Jacob McEnroe) or two years ago (mammoth Mason Semisi). No, all they have is one of the craftiest, strongest and toughest 5-foot-10 ballers you will see this season in boys basketball: Tua Unutoa. From start to finish, he battled Maryknoll’s uber-talented and long Brian Washington, a 6-4 freshman with incredibly long arms and quick feet. Unutoa’s numbers were solid, not […]
