Saint Louis, Maryknoll coaches busy

By Nick Abramo on January 8, 2015

It was a nice little basketball game at Ching Gymnasium on Wednesday night. A big Saint Louis lead, a Maryknoll comeback, and a close ending with the Crusaders holding off the Spartans 44-42. Expect more of the same in this ILH season that has just begun. The (figurative) snow has melted and the fun, competitive and exciting holiday hoops tournaments are done. Santy Claus is gone until next year. This is the real deal, now, folks, where all the leagues […]

Fourth-quarter rally propels Kalaheo to OT win

By Jason Kaneshiro on January 8, 2015

“Dead in the water.” That was Kalaheo coach Alika Smith’s description of the Mustangs’ plight facing an 11-point deficit with 3:35 left in the fourth quarter of Wednesday’s OIA East boys basketball game against No. 4 Kahuku. But top-ranked Kalaheo still had hope — and Kaleb Gilmore. For much of the first half and into the second, Kalaheo tried to shoot over Kahuku’s zone. Gilmore attacked the defense late in the game to set up teammates for scores and his quickness […]

Sabers roar through Las Vegas

By Paul Honda on January 7, 2015

The Campbell Sabers spent part of their winter break playing basketball in Las Vegas. Coach Wyatt Tau‘s team appreciated the aloha of many transplanted islanders on the so-called “ninth island”. They played four games there, winning one. Campbell defeated Liberty 56-50 on Dec. 26, then lost to Cathedral 80-26, Chaparral 39-24 and Cypress 57-55. “Heck yeah, we’re freezing,” Tau texted during the trip. “We are having fun. Maybe too much.” Temperatures in Las Vegas dipped into the 30s during their […]

Punahou’s 2 point guards are better than 1

By Nick Abramo on January 5, 2015

Punahou basketball coach Darren Matsuda was asked a sly question after a recent win. “Who is a better basketball player, Dayson Watanabe or Jordan Tanuvasa?” When he realized the question was rhetorical, Matsuda had a good chuckle. The two Buffanblu players are do-it-all point guards. They can hit the long 3-pointers, they can hit the midrange jumpers, they keep the flow of the offense moving, they make pinpoint passes, they play aggressive defense and they are quick ball-hawkers. So, what […]

LIVE BLOG: Kahuku 55, Farrington 39, F

By Paul Honda on January 3, 2015

JV game is at the half with Kahuku up 26-21. Lot of debris on the bleachers, mostly brown gunk from the ceiling. The fire-proofing stuff, blown to the floor and seats by yesterday’s storm. This is going to be a close game in the varsity matchup. Kahuku was unranked only because voters weren’t aware about the three transfers from New Zealand. I’m not expecting Kahuku to play flawless basketball this soon. Chemistry takes time to develop. But this game will […]

VIDEO: Kalaheo upsets #1 Punahou

By Paul Honda on December 31, 2014

Alec MacLeod’s putback with 1 second left lifts No. 4 Kalaheo over No. 1 Punahou 41-40 in the final of the Punahou Invitational.

Recap: Tuesday Night championship night

By Paul Honda on December 31, 2014

Maybe it’s sacrilegious, the way some of us love the holiday basketball season. I mean, not that we worship the game, but would I be willing to give up basketball, say, for lent? Ai. Yai. Yai. Tough call there. But Tuesday night was champeeenship night with final games — and the promise of a great postseason — before us. Here’s a quick spin through the three tournaments in Honolulu that closed shop until next December. >> The Mustangs gallop to […]
