By Paul Honda on March 29, 2016

It’s No. 3 Kamehameha at ‘Iolani in a baseball battle on a pristine afternoon in Moiliili. The Raiders are 3-7 but have been ranked in the Top 10 three times in the first five weeks. It’s Landon Moran of ‘Iolani against Hunter Breault of Kamehameha. 1st Logan Salcedo singles up the middle with one out but that’s as far as the visiting Warriors go. Owls jump three spots to No. 1

By Paul Honda on March 29, 2016

It would be unfair to say that the Star-Advertiser Baseball Top 10 panel of voters is biased. It would be more fair to note that they have been consistent. The votes are in and the booths are closed, so to speak, for today’s latest poll. In Week 5, Mid-Pacific is atop the rankings once again, vaulting from No. 4 right over Punahou, Pearl City and last week’s No. 1 team, Saint Louis. Mar. 29, 2016 1. Mid-Pacific (7-3) (8 first-place […]

Crusaders’ brothers play catch on every pitch

By Nick Abramo on March 27, 2016

One brother is an ace pitcher. The other is a spirited catcher and captain. When they’re both on the field for Saint Louis, they’re playing catch on every pitch. Not many siblings can say that. “I’m older by 17 months,” Crusaders senior catcher Taylor Meilleur said after Saturday’s 2-0 loss to Mid-Pacific at Central Oahu Regional Park. “Sometimes with his height, it feels like we’re the same age. I’m 5-9, 5-10 on a good day. He’s 6-0 or 6-1. I […]

Mid-Pacific’s daruma is a guiding light

By Nick Abramo on March 26, 2016

Mid-Pacific pitcher Alex Oley was carrying a box away from the field after he pitched a one-hitter in a 2-0 win over Saint Louis on Saturday at Central Oahu Regional Park. In the box was a daruma, a hollow, round Japanese doll made by assistant coach Scott Muramoto. Darumas are normally used to symbolize perseverance and good luck, according to Wikipedia. Oley said it’s his job this week to carry the daruma from Mid-Pacific to the games and back. “It […]

Sports to Ponder: Go green with bat-aided wind

By Nick Abramo on March 25, 2016

It was a hot, windless day in Ewa Beach on Wednesday, when Mililani defeated Campbell 7-2 in an Oahu Interscholastic Association baseball game. But the bat-powered wind stirred up a bit due to a bunch of strikeouts by both sides. There were a handful of batters caught looking, but of the 19 that were punched out, most were creating the slight breeze by swinging away. So, let’s hand it to the pitchers, shall we? Trojans southpaw Koa Eastlack was immense […]

Perfect Game honors 10 from Hawaii

By Billy Hull on March 24, 2016

Perfect Game and Rawlings released its preseason All-America underclassmen baseball teams on Thursday and recognized three players from Hawaii. Campbell pitcher Markus Ramos, a 6-foot-3 junior, was named to the high honorable mention team while Hilo outfielder Michael Bello and Saint Louis left-hander Dawson Yamaguchi earned honorable mention honors. Ramos has committed to Oregon while Bello, a 5-foot-10 sophomore, has pledged to Saint Mary’s. Yamaguchi, a 5-foot-10 junior, is uncommitted but had University of Hawaii assistant Carl Fraticelli at a […]

Florentin is one of Campbell’s big boys

By Nick Abramo on March 24, 2016

Dylan Florentin stands 5 feet, 5 inches and is 130 pounds, yet he is one of the big boys for the Campbell Sabers this year. Sure, you might not even see him if he’s standing behind hefty catcher Bronson Burr or burly first baseman Roy Clemons — as you would expect, the third and fourth hitters in the lineup. But put Florentin on the mound for 5 1/3 innings against powerful Mililani, and you will notice him. After a rough […]
