By Christian Shimabuku on August 25, 2019

Coach John Hao was frustrated by Castle’s winless start to the season entering Saturday night’s home matchup against Aiea. He believed the team hadn’t played anywhere near its potential. After the Knights’ 26-16 win over Na Alii for win No. 1 of the young season, Hao still wasn’t satisfied. “It’s not a weight off the shoulder but it feels good to head in the right direction,” he said. “We had an opportunity against Kapolei, and then when we played Waipahu […]

Hastings Yee Hoy and Kailua right the ship against Radford

By Christian Shimabuku on August 24, 2019

Kailua coach Joseph Wong didn’t want his team to dwell on previous losses, especially since the Surfriders were winless entering Friday night’s matchup against Radford. The Surfriders broke through for their first win of the season against the Rams in a 26-14 battle of attrition. In the end, Kailua (1-3) made fewer mistakes than the Rams (0-3), who turned the ball over five times against a stingy Surfriders defense. Despite the victory, the Surfriders turned it over three times themselves. […]

By Christian Shimabuku on August 21, 2019

When the Kalaheo High School student body filled the bleachers at its new field, the seemingly simple moment was actually decades in the making. The Lee A. Cashman Athletic Field was unveiled on Wednesday morning, named after former Mustangs athletics director Lee Cashman. A full set of bleachers, a scoreboard and two football goal posts — features the school didn’t have until now — were among the upgrades seen. “When I saw Mr. Cashman and the tears in his eyes, […]

Kaimuki’s 1-2 punch of Jayden Maiava, Naomas Asuega-Fualaau makes the Bulldogs a legit contender

By Christian Shimabuku on August 17, 2019

With roster numbers perpetually hovering in the high teens to low 30’s during David Tautofi’s tenure at Kaimuki, the Bulldogs have relied on a quality over quantity approach. That philosophy has churned out Sama Paama, who starred for the Bulldogs as a two-way lineman before signing with Washington, where he is a freshman this fall. This year, the quality seems to reside in the backfield, where quarterback Jayden Maiava and running back Naomas Asuega-Fualaau combine to form one of the […]
