Kapolei (1-1, 0-1 OIA Red West) kept it interesting by rallying in […]

By Paul Honda on August 21, 2009

By Kim Baxter Special to the Star-Bulletin It may be only mid-August, but Kahuku and Hawaii Baptist Academy played a three-set thriller yesterday in the Ann Kang Invitational at ‘Iolani worthy of November, with all the drama and intensity of a state tournament match. In a seesaw matchup between the reigning OIA champs and Division I third-place team (Kahuku) and the reigning Division II state champions (Hawaii Baptist), the two squads showed they both have the firepower and grit to […]

Here’s a look at tonight’s matchups: No. 1 Saint Louis vs. Kaimuki, Kaiser Stadium No telling if Kaimuki’s academically ineligible players will play yet, but there’s no team with more offensive firepower than Saint Louis right now. Jeremy Higgins looked […]

Punahou impressive

By Hawaii Prep World on August 19, 2009

Thank goodness for dads. Tai Manu-Olevao can say that out loud. After forgetting her game jersey, her dad, Sione, went to Kahuku to retrieve it and bring it to the Ann Kang Invitational Girls Volleyball Tournament at ‘Iolani School. That’s where Manu-Olevao pounded 14 kills to lead Punahou in a 25-12, 25-17 sweep of Molokai in opening-round pool play. “She was coming at us hard,” Molokai coach Matthew Helm said. “She was going after our right-side block.” The format, which […]

Moanalua sweeps Kahuku in volleyball

By Paul Honda on August 19, 2009

By Paul Honda For once, the Red Raiders of Kahuku looked awfully green. Kahuku saw a late four-point lead dissipate into an opening-game loss, and Carsen Mata’s superior savvy sparked Moanalua to a 26-24, 25-14 sweep last night in the regular-season opener for both teams. Mata, a senior setter and returning Star-Bulletin All-State/Fab 15 selection, finished with 20 assists and four kills. She was in total command, dinking her way for kills and delivering cross-court sets to a battery of […]

Benefit for high school athletes a hit If you timed it right, you didn’t need to wait hours to get a $1 sirloin steak plate at L&L Hawaiian Barbeque today. The Keeaumoku location, in Wal-Mart, teamed up with Keith Amemiya and the Hawaii High School Athletic Association to help high school athletes today. At 11 a.m., hundreds of hungry customers lined up outside the eatery. The line extended along the parking lot and out into the sun on Keeaumoku Street. […]

Hungry?

By Hawaii Prep World on August 18, 2009

Today might seem to be the last quiet day of the week in prep sports. OIA volleyball begins tonight while the Ann Kang Invitational, which brings together some of the top girls volleyball teams from California and Hawaii, doesn’t start until tomorrow. Football? No games, of course, until Friday, when the Oahu Interscholastic Association opens its regular season. Then there’s the big showdown on Saturday between defending state champ Punahou and defending OIA Red winner Kahuku. But really, today won’t […]
