By Jerry Campany on November 9, 2020

Kahuku High and Intermediate School administration will change the school’s mascot after more than seven decades of being the Red Raiders, according to a letter written by Kahuku principal Donna Lindsey. Lindsey will start exploring a new identity for the school after the Hawaii State Department of Education’s Civil Rights Compliance Branch received complaints that the moniker “Red Raiders” and the use of the tomahawk chop by fans are disrespectful and potentially discriminatory to Native Americans. ON THIS DATE IN 1945: Tom Carpenter and Punahou make Roosevelt pay

By Jerry Campany on October 26, 2020

You probably could hear the collective gasp in the press box by Hawaii scribes Joe Anzivino and Bill Kim. On this date in 1945, Roosevelt coach Neil “Cocky” Donahue spit in the face of conventional wisdom and ordered his quarterback to throw the ball despite a 13-7 lead with less than five minutes to play. Both sportswriters blasted the decision after Peter Wilson picked off Roy Rosa‘s pass to give the Buffanblu the ball at Roosevelt’s 11-yard line. Wilson scored […]

By Jerry Campany on October 23, 2020

On this date in 1982, Pearl City Sandy Obra just absolutely refused to give up. Obra directed his quarterbacks to put up 42 passes but Waianae stole 10 of them in a 41-7 victory for the Seariders in front of 3,966 at Aloha Stadium. The 10 picks set an OIA record established by Kahuku against Farrington way back in 1973. Pearl City quarterback Kamaki Alejado entered the game as the division’s leading passer and had thrown only five interceptions in […]

By Jerry Campany on October 22, 2020

On this date in 1928, William Centeio of McKinley paid the price for raising a few too many eyebrows. Centeio recovered three fumbles to lead the Tigers over Saint Louis 7-6 three days before. The Crusaders were tipped off that Centeio, who had been playing for the Tigers for years and was still a student at the public school, was older than the league mandated 21. Saint Louis protested the victory and ordered it overturned but lost that plea. The […]

By Jerry Campany on October 21, 2020

On this date in 1983, Pac-Five coach Don Botelho thought he knew everything Kamehameha’s Kalani Perry was capable of doing with his feet. He just didn’t expect him to use them to punt his team into submission. Perry weaved through the Wolf Pack defense for a 48-yard score and then buried Pac-Five with a 56-yard punt to the 3-yard line in a 16-0 win in front of 8,500 people at Aloha Stadium. Perry ran for 167 yards in the victory, […]

By Jerry Campany on October 20, 2020

Skyler Chan hit Kalua Noa from 18 yards left for Kaiser’s first score on a drive that featured […]

ON THIS DATE IN 1975: Tom Tuinei saves the day for Waianae

By Jerry Campany on October 19, 2020

Waianae’s 6-4, 240-pound Tom Tuinei was often considered too big to be a linebacker, so he was certainly too big to be a safety. Tuinei proved all of that wrong on this date in 1975, picking off a pass late in the game to lead Waianae to a 7-0 win over Waipahu at Aloha Stadium. Tuinei intercepted three of Scott Chan‘s passes the previous week. His running mate was Eliu Wilson, and the pair combined to make up one of […]
