It took three games, but on this date in 1946 William Wise’s McKinley offense finally clicked. The Tigers struggled with Wise’s complicated scheme in the first two games of the season but had it figured out with a 27-7 win over Iolani. Normally new programs have to work their way into contention, but Darren Hernandez and his Hurricanes reached the top of their league in only their second year of varsity football. The Hurricanes won the OIA White with a 38-21 victory over Radford at John Velasco Stadium. The school was only four years old at the time. The numbers seem almost pedestrian now, but on this date in 1993 Punahou triggerman Makaena Puli broke the ILH single-game passing record with 426 yards in a 46-21 win over Damien at Aloha Stadium. Puli broke the record held by Iolani’s Paul Ah Yat, who had 350 in 1989. His five touchdown passes tied a league record shared by Garrett Gabriel, John Hao and Joel Lane. On this date in 1988, Iolani coach Eddie Hamada prioritized offense over defense and both units benefitted. Hamada gave John Stephens his first start at quarterback and Iolani shocked Kamehameha 24-0. Trent Dilfer, Doug Williams to coach Poly Bowl

Super Bowl champion quarterbacks Doug Williams and Trent Dilfer have been selected as head coaches for the 2021 Polynesian Bowl at Aloha Stadium in January. Williams will coach Team Mauka in the nationally televised event scheduled for January 23. Dilfer will oversee Team Makai. Dilfer, currently the head coach of the Elite 11 quarterback camp, won the Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens during his 14-year NFL career. Iolani returned to the ILH after sitting out three years during World War II and didn’t take long to make an impact. On this date in 1945, coach Father Bray and all-star center Edward Hamada called on a couple of backups to make big plays and the Raiders stunned Kamehameha 14-0 in front of 12,000 fans at Honolulu Stadium. On this date in 1990, Mark Atuaia rushed for 228 yards on 24 carries and Kahuku beat Farrington 26-14 at Aloha Stadium. The Red Raiders won the battle of unbeatens mostly because Farrington coach Skippa Diaz stubbornly double-teamed Kahuku end Itula Mili, who was held without a catch.
