ON THIS DATE IN 1986: Punahou legend Shawn Akina dies

Hawaii’s leader in career passing yards had less than a year to enjoy the accomplishment. On this date in 1986, former Punahou quarterback Shawn Akina died in Salt Lake City. He was 19. Akina was the first prep quarterback in Hawaii history to throw for 1,000 yards as a sophomore and closed his prep career with a state record 5,025. On this date in 2003, Mililani traveled to Waianae and did its best impression of Searider football. The Trojans dominated time of possession — usually Waianae’s forte — to leave the West side with a key 27-20 victory and control of the OIA Red West. On this date in 1948, Punahou pulled off another upset. The Buffablu, who were expected to be bottom feeders in preseason dope after losing a large senior class, rode a stifling defense and the speed of William Heilbron to upset heavily favored Kamehameha 6-0 in front of a crowd of 18,000. ON THIS DATE IN 1954: Tiki Vasconcellos and Roosevelt back off

On this date in 1954, Tiki Vasconcellos and Roosevelt scored five touchdowns in the first half and overwhelmed Farrington 38-7. Quarterback Clayton Ching scored two touchdowns before being pulled because of the rout. Vasconcellos pulled his starters after the fourth touchdown, showing some mercy toward the overmatched Governors. Punahou ended up winning the ILH that year, but the Rough Riders took it the following three years.

Tiki Vasconcellos invented the Boom Series offense in years earlier, and on this date in 1960 it was running on all cylinders. Steve Nakamura scored two touchdowns and fell two yards short of a third as Roosevelt crushed Kaimuki 25-0 before a crowd of 10,000 at Honolulu Stadium. On this date in 1978, John Kamana carried Punahou to a 27-21 win over Iolani. Kamana was one of the ILH’s best receivers before dotting USC’s famous I formation as a tailback against Iolani. All Kamana did from there was rush for 200 yards, return a kickoff 85 yards for a TD and and add 15 yards receiving. On this date in 1984, Pac-Five needed everything it had to beat pesky Damien. The victory left the Wolf pack tied with the Saint Louis Crusaders and Kamehameha Warriors at 4-1 in the ILH standings. Pac-Five eanred its big victory thanks to a game-saving tackle by James Markwith followed by Garrett Gabriel hitting Jason Anzai from 60 yards out for a score with 4:11 left. On this date in 1996, Kaiser quarterback Grant Sato woke up from a nightmare just in time to save the Cougars from a certain loss. Kaiser beat Radford 10-6 to take first place in the OIA Blue. Sato was an anemic 3-for-34 for just 60 yards against Radford’s stout defense when he decided to try to do something with his feet.
