First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Football Championship schedule

With the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Football Championships set to begin Friday, there is no debate who the top three teams in the state are.

Two-time defending OIA champion Kahuku picked up all 15 first-place votes for the second straight week in the latest Honolulu Star-Advertiser Football Top 10 released Monday.

Two-time defending ILH champion Saint Louis, which lost to Kahuku in the Division I state final last season, received all 15 second-place votes this week while ILH runner-up Punahou was listed at No. 3 on every ballot.

The schedule for the six-team Open Division state tournament was released Saturday night. No. 1 Kahuku will potentially have to beat both No. 3 Punahou and No. 2 Saint Louis in order to win its ninth state championship.

The entire top 10 remained the same for the previous week with No. 4 Farrington remaining in that spot despite losing 44-8 to the Red Raiders. Farrington (8-3) will play No. 6 Waianae (8-4) in Saturday’s first round of the Open Division while No. 5 Kapolei (9-2), which won the OIA Red regular season, takes on the Buffanblu.

Voters seem to favor a championship game in the Division I tournament between No. 7 Mililani and No. 8 Campbell. Baldwin, which is ranked No. 9, plays the seventh-ranked Trojans in the first round on Friday at War Memorial Stadium. Hilo, which is No. 10 this week, will host Leilehua.

The Vikings were seeded first in the Division I tournament.

Three of the four games in the first round of the Division I tournament involve ranked teams. The only matchup with teams outside of the top 10 pits ‘Iolani against Moanalua.

  1. oia#1 October 31, 2016 3:08 pm

Theres no debating the #1 team either and its not even close!

  2. Just Saying... October 31, 2016 3:41 pm

Besides Bishop Gorman Kahuku played lower level D1-D2 programs all season so real test will be back to back wins with potentially Puns and Saints hence why Kahuku nation not happy with tournament bracket. Real test coming!

  3. anywaaaays!! October 31, 2016 3:50 pm

and there is no debating…”THE TEN COMMANDMENTS OF THE OPEN DIVISION!!!!!”

Q: How are the seedings unfair?
A: There are no seedings its all made up, besides the OIA#1 and ILH#1 in seperate brackets the rest are thrown into a hat – the hat placed on the Hokulea to set sail for South America

Q: Why dont Kahuku fans Lobby your AD’s/Coaches to change the system?
A: We dont lobby we play ball! We trust that our competitors and men in charge act with integrity, instead the HHSAA wants ticket sales and the ILH want the playing advantages. Money and Pride stand in the way of integrity

Q: You dont lobby? what are you Hawaiians with no land!
A: Screw you who ever asked that question

Q: Are the “2015 STL State champs” and “2015 Mililani OIA champs” tshirts on the Hokulea too?
A: No, those shirts are going to Africa

Q: Some say that they dont want to see PUNS play STL a 4th time
A: You dont want to see them play each other in the semis but you dont mind if they play each other in the finals. Hypocrites.

Q: Is Kahuku scared to play both ILH teams?
A: No, its about fairness 1&4 in BracketA 2&3 in BracketB. STL is #2, PUNS are #3 and should be in the same bracket. If you want you can Line up all 3 ILH teams to play us, just dont call it a tournament, call it your made-up “HHSAA/ILH Football Classic”

Q: So similar to girls volleyball. Kahuku#1,Kam#2,Iolani#3
A: Yes, Iolani#3 went into Kahuku#1 bracket giving Kam an easy bracket.

Q: So are you saying the ILH#2 seed St. Louis has an easy road to the title game?
A: Is Kalihi st. in Kalihi?

Q: What do the UFC and HHSAA have in common?
A: They both create match-ups to make the most $$$$$$

Q: Does June Jones offense suck?
A: Leave JJ alone he is for the public schools so he is good in our book. yes it sucks!

    Q: Is Cal Lee overrated?
A: Leave Cal alone he just had surgery and is forever the Godfather, as far as his coaching yes overrated!

Q: Is Kale Ane the King of recruiting in Hawaii?
A: Leave Kale alone my son is a 5th grader at Hauula Elementary with lots of potential. Yes he is the king!

  6. Just Replying... October 31, 2016 5:09 pm

    @Just Saying…
Are you saying that Waianae and Farrington are lower level D1 programs? You thinking is flawed. That is the same as saying “Besides playing each other, Saint Louis and Punahou have played lower level D1-D2 teams. Their real test is coming.”

  7. 99boiz October 31, 2016 6:10 pm

@justsaying. I agree with you, the OIA is a weak league, after Kahuku the drop off in competition is far. I cant wait till Punahou demolish Kapolei this week and St. Louis demolishes their OIA opponent so that all this talk of conference alliance can die along with this Open division format.

  8. anywaaaays!! October 31, 2016 6:22 pm

Hey Chris Chun or anyone from the HHSAA committee you still have not released your reasoning for the brackets in the open division. According to this article and it sounds like every media outlet in the state agree that the seeding should be based on the “NON DEBATABLE” rankings of the Top 06 teams.

    1. Kahuku
    2. St. Louis
    3. Punahou
    4. Farrington
    5. Kapolei
    6. Waianae

    BracketA:
#1 Kahuku vs. winner of 4vs6
    #4 Farrington vs. #6 Kapolei

    BracketB:
#2 St. Louis vs. winner of 3vs5
    #3 Punahou vs. #5 Kapolei

  9. ilh October 31, 2016 6:51 pm

If Punahou or St. Louis had the same schedule as Kahuku, it would be a cake walk too, except with Bishop Gorman, Even Iolani would probably do well with the Kahuku Schedule. Kahuku is to strong for any OIA team, no competition for Kahuku in the OIA, THEY WIL DO IT AGAIN NEXT YEAR TOO. And stop complaining about the Brackets, it’s a done deal. no excuses when it’s all done. Just suck it up. the ILH will be prepared this time around.

  10. 88 October 31, 2016 7:11 pm

ILH Kahuku would love to have played Iolani and Kamehameha twice however Kahuku doesn’t play flag football. So instead we played Waianae and Farrington twice and Mililani.

  11. Jason Keuma October 31, 2016 7:20 pm

I look forward to #4 ILH playing #5 OIA.

If the OIA is a weak league why have they won more than half of the State Championships?

The brackets are a done deal, this year.
The common man can knows that #4 goes in the #1 bracket in a 6 team playoff. Anyone who says differently is probable not a public school graduate.

  12. Simple Simon October 31, 2016 7:39 pm

ILH is so overrated. ST Louis and Punahou’s defense is the most terrible defenses we’ve ever seen. Punahou is going down this week and St Louis is going down next week.

  13. anywaaaays!! October 31, 2016 8:29 pm

Jason, Remove Kahuku from the equation and the ILH will have 13 titles the OIA only 2, Saying that the OIA is equal or greater is the manipulative argument that the ILH is using to combine the two leagues. This combining benefits only the ILH because their 3 team league is not satisfying the talents of their recruited “HIGH PROFILE” athletes. They need more diversity of opponents and exposure in state tournaments.

After seeing what the ILH is doing to the OIA with the brackets do you really want to be in the same bed with these greasy fools? NO! they only have their own interests in mind and thats why they needed to dangle $3 Million dollars in front of the OIA to combine the leagues. I hope you feel the same way as I do and dont want the OIA to prostitute its members out for $3 Million dollars. $300 Million yeah Ill spread my legs too LOL, but not $3 mill.

The OIA D1 is very competitive on our own with all our schools on a level playing field. Kahuku is on another level but our success in no way should justify the catering to the whims and crys of the ILH elitists.

The OIA is not up to the level of the ILH, only Kahuku can hang with them. Just watch what happens these next few weeks.

  14. 3ple3et October 31, 2016 10:28 pm

No problem with the Open Divisionʻs top 3.

Problem with Division 1 ranking. Hilo #1. Come on Man.

Problem with Division 2 rankings. Kapaa gets a bye. Come on Man.

I know that to be the best you gotta beat the best. But, at this time of the year, OIA teams beat up each other and ILH teams beat up each other. A bye would help. I see the HHSAA continue giving these undeserved teams high rankings and byeʻs in both football and basketball. These rankings must have been given out to the neighbor islands before the season started. Itʻs like receiving participation trophy. You get it for showing up.

  15. Hauula93 October 31, 2016 10:33 pm

I’m a Kahuku graduate and For you people that think the other 3 OIA teams can’t hang with the ILH.. Think twice.. I think anything can happen.. Who thought Farrington was going to beat Kapolei in the semi’s. No one.. Who thought punahou was going to win the second round after letting St.Louis score 63 points on them.. No one… Even KAHUKU can fall, we seen it happen this pass weekend with the volleyball and JV team.. We beat waianae JV team by double digits in the regular season and they won the JV championship .. So anything is possible.. It’s how well your coach prepare his team that week and how hungry your team is that week.. So suck it up, and let the games begin…Let’s stop winning and play play ball.. We knew we didn’t have chance against Bishop Gorman, but it ‘s a chance we are willing to take.. The opportunity to be the best in the state and silence all these doubts…So its put up or shut up time… May the best teams win… GOOD LUCK.. RRFL…

  16. 99boiz October 31, 2016 10:55 pm

H93- You started off by saying that anything could happen to any team on any given day and close by saying, going into the Gorman game Kahuku had no chance? So you dont have faith in Kahuku as the underdog but anything can happen when Kahuku is the favorite? wow! my mind is blown!

  17. Kailua Boys November 1, 2016 12:06 am

More so than a kahuku vs. st. louis game is a kahuku vs punahou game. I can’t wait!

Time to strap up or shut up boyz.
Nice we get the bye to rest and heal and get on the books like Coach Tata said.
On that note, shout out to Coach Cal Lee, wishing him a speedy recovery from Red Raider Nation.
To my fellow RRNation, stay classy and no fall for the bait to stoop low, nothing comes out about grumbling, whats done is done and I bet the Raiders are chomping at the bit to DEFEND their title. Win, lose or draw, Coach Tata will have them ready to rock and role.
Good luck to all teams playing. Pray no injuries to anybody.

  20. Jason Keuma November 1, 2016 6:04 am

Anywaysss- I liked your Q and A post, and the bracket post. I agree with your not wanting the OIA to sell out to the ILH.

They got the ILH to agree to the no 19 year olds, by getting them into the state playoffs. The OIA got the favorable transfer rule. Now the ILH wants “easy” games, by using The public schools.

Counting the number of players on the ILH teams, you will find that they have a higher number than the public schools. Here’s a thought, maybe the OIA should try to limit the number of players on a team. If they did that, then those other players would be at their own schools.

  21. Jason Keuma November 1, 2016 6:06 am

Forgot about the ilh 4, cat wait to see how they fair against the OIA. That article should get 70 comments. Open bracket article is up to 150.

  22. Northshore November 1, 2016 7:18 am

Whatever happened to the two inconsistent voters that were giving their 1st place votes to Punahou and St Louis? What made them change their way of voting? Probably being ILH graduates and being bias. I guess they finally realized that their votes were bias and finally gave their 1st place votes to Kahuku. Like I’ve said before, whoever starts at the number 1 position, should be voted number 1 until they’re defeated and not be so bias just because St Louis beat Punahou or vice versa. A voter should always vote with their brain and not their heart.

According to this article and it sounds like every media outlet in the state agree that the seeding should be based on the “NON DEBATABLE” rankings of the Top 06 teams.

oooookay. I’m gonna go over this again, because obviously you people can’t read. This has been rehashed multiple times and fyi, tournament brackets and seeding procedures are public record and have always been done this way since the invention of the state tournament in hawaii, basically. If you want to confirm this, call up vavae tata or the kahuku AD. but i know you won’t because you do love your conspiracy theories.

    1. SA rankings don’t matter. they were invented in the mid 2000s probably to promote readership and interest in the sport. nobody looks at them except people who comment on these blogs. they’re not used for seeding in ANY postseason tournament. stop bringing up the rankings becuase nobody except scared butthurt kahuku fans whining about matchups and conspiracies care about them. You know, the people who brag about how dominant kahuku is and then cry and whine about matchups and how the world is against them.

    2. Open division is a six team state tournament consisting of just OIA and ILH teams (neighbor island leagues declined to participate because they felt they had no chance as of yet). So there are two seeds in the bracket reserved for the winner of ILH and OIA.

    3. After the seeding is determined (this year, kahuku got the 1 seed, st louis got #2), league runner ups are placed in the half OPPOSITE of their league champs. Therefore, punahou is placed in kahuku’s bracket and farrington is placed in st louis’s bracket. this is standard procedure for ALL state tournaments that are team sports in hawaii. It always has been.

    4. The remaining two teams from the OIA (third and fourth place teams) were most likely placed in the top or bottom half of the draw by coin flip.

That’s how the brackets are filled out. that’s how they were ALWAYS filled out for pretty much EVERY sport except bowling. go talk to your local AD or football coach, or call the HHSAA office if you don’t believe me. Nobody is trying to screw over public schools, kahuku, or whatever. there is no conspiracy. the matchups in the open division should be fun to watch. If you have a problem with how state tournaments are run, instead of trashing people who work hard for very little pay anonymously online, how about you VOLUNTEER to coach or help the team and talk to your local AD to tell the OIA rep to propose a motion to amend the HHSAA bylaws to have seedings for tournaments based on some worthless poll voted on by sports journalists in hawaii who may or may not have even played football.

Understand how the process works then try to change it by getting involved.

    IF NOT THEN STOP WHINING.

A lot of kahuku fans here won’t be able to. They enjoy whining about conspiracies and matchups too much. and “non debatable” rankings and how the world is out to get them. meanwhile the kids and coaches for all teams are just like “whatever. we go out to play.”

ok al, so this is an oia vs ilh tournament. maybe next year well get a true tournament with proper seedings of the top 6 teams

  31. Chloropicrin November 1, 2016 8:31 am

Top 3 teams are correct: Kahuku, Punahou and St. Louis. Perennial gate keepers are Waianae, Farrington and Kamehameha. And the rest have good teams a few years, Mililani, Kapolei and Leilehua.

  32. Education First November 1, 2016 9:22 am

@ Al, do you know what is crazy? Some person (88/toomeke/anywaays/goodstory) think just because Hawaii Prep world wrote this story the top 3 teams discussed in this story in like the Word of God.

This article doesn’t even have an author.

I bet you there are a lot of people in Kalihi who think Farrington is #3 or even #2. Rankings are subjective.

But 88 and his alter-ego’s think rankings are objective and the SA Ranking’s are like the bible.

I will discuss this with him in person today when he meets me for lunch. I am curious why he is so absolute in his thinking.

  33. Education First November 1, 2016 9:28 am

@ Al, these people will not volunteer. They will not try to make change. They cannot. That would force them to stop hiding behind their fake names and allow themselves to be judged. They will hide behind their anonymous names. Why you might ask? They know they are idiots. Do you really think they will allow people to judge them and not remain anonymous?

Could you imagine if 88 was even in leadership then his alter-egos came on this blog to talk negatively about him? He would slit his wrist.

The guy cannot even meet in public. The guy is so dumb he didn’t even notice that I told him my name, listed where I would be, and asked him to meet me. And what is more funny you might ask? He didn’t see it, called me out, and actually commented on the exact string where I invited him to meet me.

Do you recall seeing any of those posts where I put my name Will, and where I would be dining for business lunches?

congrats kahuku for earning the #1ranking in the state and having the hardest bracket

Punahou has the hardest bracket sir. Kahuku has to go through one league champion (St. Louis) and a second place team (Punahou).

Punahou has to play an extra game (Kapolei). Then they have to play the defending #1 seeded OIA Champion (Kahuku). If they get by Kapolei and Kahuku, they will have to potentially face the ILH Champ (STL).

Please be objective when you write.

How is Kahuku’s road tougher than Punahou when Kahuku only plays 2 games vs. 3 for Punahou. And Kahuku has to face the ILH Champ and their second place team. But Punahou has to face the ILH and OIA Champ plus an additional game.

  35. Andrew Hopoi November 1, 2016 9:33 am

Easy to explain how the seeding is being done! St. louis and Punahou cannot be in the same bracket cause their are from the same conference(ILH). Thats why Farrington is not in the same bracket as Kahuku.

@ Andrew, it’s easy to explain for people who are objective and don’t think an organization (HHSAA) who oversees more than 30 sports involving hundreds of school with thousands of kids is sitting behind a table trying to construct rules to screw only 1 school in 1 sport.

But 88 and his merry names think the HHSAA and possibly the ILH is out to screw Kahuku. He feels this way because he knows that without football he would have nothing to blog about and he won’t be able to strap his harness to any kind of winner.

The team who shows up prepared and ready to play is gonna come out on top at the end of all this! But you gotta admit that this is gonna be the most exciting finals we have ever seen.. We all gonna see some games that we would never have seen in the past, period. Everybody needs to look at the bright side of things instead of beating a dead horse!!! Good luck to everybody from da open division all the way down to D2. Championships are won on the field not a blog. Just enjoy these last few weeks cuz after that no one gonna have anything to bitch about!

  40. Eastsidaz November 1, 2016 12:07 pm

The bottom line is once you are in the “Open”, then you no longer ILH or OIA. You are simply now the best 6 teams the state has to offer… It doesn’t matter if you come from the same conf, you should be seated in according to ranking and #1 should play the winner of #4 and #6… While #2 should play the winner of #3 & #5….. This set up isn’t the fair shake for #1! The justification that ILH can’t play ILh within the same bracket, is ridiculous… 2 OIA teams are playing in the same bracket in the first round. Makes no sense at all! Again, once you are the big 6 in the state it doesn’t matter what conf you come from. Okay according to ranking and seeding. Very interesting how this is set up.. at the end this season let the champ be the champ!! Whoever it maybe. Let whoever is the top 6 be the top 6.. we no longer are interested in who’s OIA or ILH. Those individual playoffs are over… We just want to see who is King for 2016 and want to see #1 play the winner of 4&6 and #2 play the winner of 3&5…. PERIOD!! This is the Open for the States with its best 6….

Thats right, no bitch, AUWE is right. These are some great games coming up. No more “oh they never played so and so” or “oh they had one easy schedule…”, and when Kahuku comes out on top, that’s it. Nobody can say anything. And if by some chance Big Red is defeated (boy that was hard to type) so be it, got to give props to who ever beats them. But I know Big Red going to come ready to bang, no doubt about that.

Education First was right, yes, Big Red has a hard schedule, but not as tough as Punahou’s. And St. Louis is playing Waianae or Farrington, two teams that carry a big stick and like to fly around and hit somebody, so don’t count anybody out. These six teams can play some ball and I wish we lived back on the Island to see some awesome games these next few weeks.
So just be excited, sit back and enjoy the show.

@ Red Raider 4 Life – You should be the mayor of Kahuku. You are insightful, articulate, and seem to have a great perspective on things. It’s unfortunate that 88 and his merry alter-egos (good story, too meke, anywaaays) are not like you. If so, I believe the athletics would continue to flourish and the academics start to rise. 88 likes to make excuses and blame volunteers for their decision.

@ AUWE – PREACH MAN, PREACH!

@ 88 – If you aren’t going to show (again), can you at least tell me so we don’t wait to order? Man, do you have any manners?

Some of the things said in here are comical and I enjoy the laugh. Let’s enjoy this inaugural Open division playoffs because there will be some classic match ups. May the best team win and play with pride!

So full of it. I was there from 11:45am – 1:30pm. First of all the person who was working the front of the house today was a guy because the normal hostess wasn’t working.

Look at 88, making up lies. Anyone can authenticate this by calling the restaurant and asking who was seating people today. It was a guy.

You are sad 88. It’s unfortunate that you aren’t like AUWE or Red Raider for Life, you know, people from the Kahuku Community who demonstrate pride and integrity. Unlike you, who continues to lie, make fake screen names to back yourself up.

And then to come back on here pretending to be some place when it’s obvious you were never there.

Such a sad life you must lead….

88 I know you want to be correct. But most people get their points across by composing a thesis statement. Then they support it with evidence. They not need to resort to lying or making secondary names to strengthen their arguments. You make your argument with evidence and supporting details. I will help you for free since you seemed to have skipped this class in the 2nd grade.

The point I was trying to make is that the six best teams are in this tournament! No matter how you seed them the best team is gonna come out on top. But yeah all six of them deserve to be there, they earned it! But yeah I think punahou has the hardest road there, good luck to them. And Waianae kapolei and farrington with the extra game. I got all the confidence in big red this year, so no matter who they gotta play they gonna come out on top, solid defense and a productive offense. But nothing is gauranteed. And if we don’t then I’ll be the first on here to congratulate the champion, why, cuz you gotta win and lose with class. No need for excuses. Go Big Red!!!!!

    And @88 & @Education First
You two are friggin hilarious! Keeps us all entertained all year long!!! You two moa funny den da Braddahs!!!

@Al This is from the Coaches handbook for the HSSAA Football(NOT boys Volleyball like you keep referring to) Tournament:
    • #1 & #2 seeds have first-round byes
    • Remaining teams will be paired and
placed at sites by the committee
The ” REMAINING TEAMS will be paired and PLACED at sites by the COMMITTEE.” STOP bringing up this crap about placing the ILH #2 OPPOSITE from the ILH #1 because in the HISTORY OF HAWAII HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL the ILH #2 has NEVER EVER participated in the STATE FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT.
Now look at the same HSSAA Football handbook at it will show you that ACCORDING TO THEIR PLACEMENT OF TEAMS THE #1 PLAYS THE WINNER OF THE #4 GAME AND THE #2 PLAYS THE WINNER OF THE #3 GAME. Its in black and white! If they followed the SAME procedures they used LAST YEAR #1 Kahuku would be playing the winner of the #4 game. Now who is #4 in the State of Hawaii according to every SPORTS WRITER and HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL FOLLOWER?

we all know its rigged in the favor of ILH, play ball people and lets see if money will buy the ilh a title this year
