GAME NIGHT 8/5: Campbell/Kapolei

It’s opening night in the 808 with seven high school football games scheduled for Oahu.

Expectations are extremely high this season for the sixth-ranked Kapolei Hurricanes, who open the season hosting the Campbell Sabers, who are looking for a bounce-back season after finishing 2-8 last season. Kickoff is set for approximately 7:30 p.m. with live updates to follow below.

10:15 p.m.: And that’s how it ends, impressive job by Kapolei once it got going. 38-0 and the Hammer that goes with it.


10:00 p.m.: Jaymin Sarono 15 TD pass from Tagovailoa, his fifth TD pass of the game. Meyer kick. 38-0 with 6:43 left.

9:44 p.m.: Tagovailoa 28 yard TD pass to Wyatt Perez. Meyer kick, 31-0. 11 seconds to go in third quarter. That is the Kapolei fans have been waiting for.

9:41 p.m.: Tagovailoa 6-yard TD pass to Jaymin Sarono. Meyer kick is good. 24-0; 4:59 left in 3rd Q.

9:21 p.m.: Perez and Campbell’s Iosua Sevao collide. Perez is shaken up, but comes to the bench running.

9:19 p.m.: Leonard Lee intercepts Ulufale pass on second play of first half and returns it 35 yards. Next play, Tagovailoa hits Perez for a 20-yard TD. Meyer kick makes it 17-0 with 11:38 to go.

Two plays later, Kalani Segovia picks off an Ulufale pass in the end zone. Looks like Kapolei might keep the hammer for its first year. That’s right, Hernandez and Amosa finally agreed on a perpetual trophy for this rivalry.

8:58 p.m.: Tagovailoa is 9-for-14 for 104 yards and a TD at the half. Ulufale is 10-for-16 for 80 yards at the half

8:41 p.m.: Tagovailoa hits a streaking Isaiah Ahana for a 30-yard gain; His first long completion. Tagovailoa 26-yard TD pass to Wyatt Perez; 1:40 left in half. Beau Meyer kick is good; Hurricanes lead 10-0.

8:38 p.m.: Ulufale pass to Faumui gets them to the 1. Vernon Etrata-Daite is dropped for a 4-yard loss by Kapolei’s Dylan Naehu. Kapolei calls timeout. Campbell has a third and goal from the 5. Ulufale sacked for 10 yards by Omar Mareko. Ulufale is sacked by Tagovailoa-Amosa for a 15-yard loss. Change of possession. 2:55 left in half.

8:32 p.m.: Ulufale hits Markus Ramos with three straight passes. Campbell deep into Kapolei territory. Tasi Faumui two hard runs by the Sabers to the Kapolei 16. Campbell faces fourth and 1

8:24 p.m.: Tagovailoa pass dropped by wide open Sarono in corner of end zone. Beau Meyer 33-yard field goal. Kapolei 3, Campbell 0. 8:44 left in half.

8:18 p.m.: Taulia Tagovailoa back in game, completes three dink passes for a total of 3 yards; End first quarter. Scoreless.

8:11 p.m.: Campbell on the Kapolei 30. Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa bats down a third-down pass. It’s fourth and 10; 1:20 left in first Q

8:07 p.m.: Campbell QB Kawika Ulufale completes first three passes, including two to Fangaima Mailei. Taulia Tagovailoa warming up on sideline

8:05 p.m.: On a third down play, Campbell’s Poki‘i Adkins-Kupukaa intercepts a Lee pass. Campbell QB Kawika Ulufale completes first two passes completes first three passes, including two to Fangaima Mailei


8:00 p.m.: Campbell punt return is fumbled and recovered by Kapolei’s Elisha Amina at the Campbell 15.

7:54 p.m.: Tagovailoa is up and limping with help from two coaches.
Leonard Lee, the backup, completes two passes and Kapolei is at the 47. Not quite what Kapolei had in mind to start the season.

7:39 p.m.: Campbell won the toss and elected to kick.

7:14 p.m.: Kapolei’s JV starts the season with a 26-16 win over Campbell.

For now, here are some game notes to enjoy:

Last meeting: Defensive back Jay Amina intercepted a pass to set up Kapolei’s first touchdown and broke up a fourth-down pass to end a Campbell drive late in a 16-7 win by the Hurricanes on Sept. 11, 2015.

>> Campbell leads the all-time series 5-4.

>> Since Bronson Ellis-Rivera finished a yard short of 200 rushing yards in the first meeting between the two teams, Campbell has not had a 100-yard rusher against the Hurricanes since.

>> Kapolei has won both meetings when the two teams were held to less than 27 points.

>> Campbell went 2-0 last season when its QB threw for more than 200 yards and 0-8 when it was held under 200 passing yards.

>> Kapolei head coach Darren Hernandez spent six seasons as the head coach at Campbell, winning 33 games from 1994 to ’99. He has won 73 games in 14 years at Kapolei and is one of 27 head coaches in Hawaii history with at least 100 career wins.

>> Campbell is 7-1 under Amosa Amosa when a player rushes for at least 100 yards in a game.


>> Campbell held Kapolei to zero passing yards in an 18-14 win in 2013.

>> Kapolei QB Taulia Tagovailoa threw for more than 350 yards in four of the seven games he started last season as a freshman.
