GLORY DAYS: Coach Darren Johnson and the 2019 Campbell Sabers

By Nick Abramo on June 20, 2019

FIRST IN A SERIES This summer, head coaches from all 28 Oahu high school varsity football teams are being asked to recount their football playing days. One coach who has already been interviewed for this multi-part series pointed out what he thinks may be the value of this endeavor: “A lot of times, you only hear about coaches when they’re getting released or are having a special season. It’s super hard to have a special season, so this should shed […]

Blaze Soares takes over as defensive coordinator at Campbell

By Nick Abramo on June 20, 2019

Blaze Soares, who was Kalaheo’s defensive coordinator last year, is the DC under Darren Johnson at Campbell now. Soares is a former Castle and University of Hawaii standout linebacker. “I coached against him when I was at Kailua,” Campbell head coach Darren Johnson said. “Picking him up was a great thing.” Soares had not planned on being a coach until his uncle, Kalaheo assistant Wendell Domingo, asked him to come back and help out. “That lit the (coaching) fire for […]

Sophomore Blaine Hipa’s progression leads Campbell to 7v7 title

By Paul Honda on June 15, 2019

Blaine Hipa is better today than he was yesterday, that’s for sure. Hipa showed flashes of brilliance as a freshman last fall at Campbell. In the eight months since, the lanky southpaw has filled out his frame with some muscle. More so, he has become efficient with his progression from the pocket. It showed on Saturday when he tossed five touchdown passes in a 30-20 win over talented Mililani in the final of the Los Angeles Rams 7v7 tournament at […]

By Nick Abramo on April 3, 2019

Campbell will be hosting a Phoenix team this fall in the finale of a home-and-home series. Last season, the Sabers went to Phoenix, where they beat the Sandra Day O’Connor High 37-20. “They’ve got some good, D-I caliber kids and a really good coaching staff,” Campbell coach Darren Johnson said about the Eagles. Steve Casey, a former Virginia Tech quarterback who coaches O’Connor, is a longtime friend of Johnson. When Johnson was a player at Arizona Western, Casey was the […]

Campbell’s Peter Manuma receives offer from UH

By Nick Abramo on March 1, 2019

Campbell’s Peter Manuma received an offer from the University of Hawaii, according to Sabers coach Darren Johnson. Manuma, who is 6 feet and 190 pounds, can play multiple positions and Johnson expects the junior-to-be will get a lot more offers before his high school career is done. “He’s exciting to watch and can pretty much play anywhere on the field,” Johnson said. “In college, I think they’re looking at him as a strong safety or outside linebacker.” Manuma is a […]

The 5-foot-11, 175-point two-way player made an oral commitment to Hawaii on Sunday, though he cannot sign his letter of intent until, at the earliest, December. “UH offered me as a sophomore during the summer time. Me and my family sat down […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Campbell Sabers

By Jerry Campany on November 21, 2018

The Campbell Sabers put together their third straight winning season and made it to the state tournament for the first time since 2016 before their loss to Mililani’s machine. Darren Johnson finished his second year at the school with a 15-10 record, matching the winning percentage of predecessors Amosa Amosa and Tumoana Kenessey. They won eight games for the first time since Amosa won nine in 2013. The Sabers took their share of beatings in the new Open Division, causing […]

Campbell poised for a big year in 2019

By Christian Shimabuku on November 16, 2018

Truth be told, Tyrese Tafai would have rather spent his birthday on the field with the rest of his Campbell teammates. The junior linebacker, who has missed more than half of the season with a shoulder injury, could only watch in street clothes as the Sabers fell to Mililani 24-2 in the Open Division semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships on Friday night at Aloha Stadium. Campbell trailed 7-2 at halftime but turned the ball over five […]
