APRIL 30, 1979: Campbell AD Marlyn Burke faces first challenge

By Jerry Campany on April 30, 2020

In 1977 track and field coach Marlyn Burke was celebrated as Hawaii’s first female athletic director. On this day in 1979, the honeymoon was officially over. Campbell football coach Bernard Daos led a revolt against Burke, submitting his letter of resignation a week before spring practice along with track and field coach Allan Nash and wrestling coach Steve Ching. Golf coach Bill Bartlow also resigned, but changed his mind the next day. Daos cited ‘personal reasons’ but Nash pointed the […]

Campbell QB Blaine Hipa on offer from Tennessee: ‘It’s amazing and crazy’

By Hawaii Prep World on March 25, 2020

This call came out of nowhere, almost. When Blaine Hipa picked up his phone on Wednesday, he knew it might be a truly long-distance connection. What he didn’t expect was to have a scholarship offer from Tennessee. “Amazing. It’s crazy. It kind of motivates me to want to do more,” said Hipa, a sophomore quarterback who helped Campbell reach the Open Division state tournament last season. “It was a big surprise. I heard from Coach (Nanumi) Lolohea by phone two […]

The shutdown has changed life for all, but brothers Tamatoa and Titus Mokiao-Atimalala are grinding through. With the COVID-19 virus shutdown in effect, the Campbell football players are still finding ways to work out — but only after doing their daily chores. Tamatoa, who is signed with Hawaii, and Titus, who has 15 college scholarship offers, chatted about life in the new reality.

Long break, no problem, because brothers Titus and Tamatoa Mokiao-Atimalala have goals. “We have lots of chores,” said Titus, a junior who collected his 14th and 15th football scholarship offers in the past week. Oregon, then USC, contacted the 6-foot-1, 175-pound two-way athlete. “I was kind of waiting on this. We talked for awhile now and I’m happy that they pulled the trigger. I know the USC coach was telling me that he was going to come down in the […]

Campbell’s Titus Mokiao-Atimalala all the rage with recruiters

By Paul Honda on November 28, 2019

The tsunami seems surreal for Titus Mokiao-Atimalala. Last week, the Campbell junior received three more scholarship offers from FBS schools. This week, the wave continued with Nebraska and Washington State. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound wide receiver also has offers from Hawaii, Cal, Oregon State, Michigan, Utah and Wisconsin. For quite some time, it seemed like the world might never notice the mammoth sophomore season he had. Now, it is snowballing. “It’s truly a blessing and I’m thankful to God and all […]

By Nick Abramo on November 22, 2019

Darren Johnson, a grown man with a hard-nosed football past, was crying real tears after talking to his players. His eyes were fully watered and red. That’s love. His Campbell Sabers had just come oh-so-close to moving on to the Open Division title game of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Football Championships at Aloha Stadium. It got away, though, in the semifinals on Friday night at Aloha Stadium. No. 5 Campbell led by three at the half before No. 3 […]
