GAME NIGHT 8/4: Kapolei/Campbell

10:17: Game over. Final score, KAPOLEI 23, CAMPBELL 7.

10:13: Kapolei drives, but Pokii Adkins-Kupukaa picks off a pass in his own end zone. Sabers ball.

10:05: Campbell punts. 6:16 left in game.


9:57: Aaron Faumui sacks Kaipo in the end zone for a safety. KAPOLEI 23, CAMPBELL 7, 10:18 left in fourth quarter.

9:50: Titus Mokiao-Atimalala splits two defenders down the left sideline to catch a 35-yard touchdown pass from Kalaola. Bantolina kicks the extra point. KAPOLEI 21, CAMPBELL 7, 11:51 remaining in the fourth quarter.

9:48: END OF THIRD QUARTER.

9:45: Campbell punts and the Hurricanes take over at the Sabers’ 44.

9:41: Kalaloa completes five of six passes to move the ball to the Campbell 4. The drive stalls and Bantolina misses a 22-yard field goal wide left.

9:33: The Sabers will be punting from their own 10. Not much offense since the first quarter.

9:29: Kapolei picks up one first down on short completions to the Mokiao-Atimalala brothers, but the drive stalls and the Hurricanes punt.

9:25: Campbell gives the ball up on downs with a Treven Maae sack and a nice pass breakup by Saint Louis transfer Dylan Toilolo .

9:23: Kapolei goes three and out and a short punt gives the Sabers the ball at the Kapolei 38.

9:18: Second-half kick is moments away.

9:01: Kaipo is 9-for-20 for 104 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions at halftime. Kalaola is 5-for-15 for 69 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

9:00: Campbell takes over at the 17 and the clock winds down as Etrata-Daite drops a Kaipo pass in the middle of the end zone. Halftime. KAPOLEI 14, Campbell 7.

8:58: Kapolei’s Kevin Burkel decides to run out of his own end zone on a fourth and 24 instead of punt and he only gains 11 yards.

8:50: Defense starts to take over. Kapolei intercepts a Campbell pass. The Sabers’ Jacob Covington intercepts a Kapolei pass. The Hurricanes punt, and then the Hurricanes’ Saige Mactagone-Kuhaulua intercepts a Campbell pass in the Kapolei end zone.

8:36: A Kapolei player on the punt return touches a loose ball and Campbell’s Nakoa Kalama recovers at the Kapolei 33. The Sabers lose the ball on downs, thanks to three sacks by the Hurricanes’ Treven Maae, Kukea Emmsely and Aaron Faumui.

8:30: END FIRST QUARTER.

8:29: Viliami Vaimoui catches a 13-yard pass from Kaipo for a first down, but the drive stalls.


8:22: A Kalaola 40-yard pass down the right sideline to Keanu Barboza sets up Kaipo’s 5-yard TD pass to Titus Mokiao-Atimalala. Bantolina adds the extra point. KAPOLEI 14, CAMPBELL 7, 3:15 left in first quarter.

8:16: Two first downs later, Kaipo hits Pokii Adkins-Kupukaa on an inside screen. Adkins-Kupukaa finds daylight and weaves his way for a 38-yard touchdown. Ariel Villanueva adds the extra point. KAPOLEI 7, CAMPBELL 7, 5:09 remaining in first quarter.

8:09: It’s Campbell’s third possession, and Kaipo hits Vernon Etrata-Daite for 13 yards and a first down.

8:06: Three plays later, Kalaola finds Mokiao-Atimalala for a 5-yard TD. Braedon Bantolina adds the extra point. KAPOLEI 7, CAMPBELL 0, 8:09 remaining first quarter.

8:05: On a fourth-down situation, Kalaola hits Tamatoa Mokiao-Atimalala with a 15-yard pass and a firt down.

8:00: Dreyden Steele-Kawewehi gives Kapolei a big break. Standing back to punt, he took off and caught the Sabers by surprise and picked up 24 yards and a first down.

7:58: Campbell calls timeout. Krenston Kaipo will be starting his second series as the Sabers’ QB.

7:57: Three straight incompletions. Hurricanes will punt.

7:56: Kaniala Kalaola is the QB for Kapolei.

7:54: Campbell goes three and out. Two passes and a run.

7:50: Campbell will receive the kickoff. Kapolei is defending the south end zone.

7:41: National anthem is upcoming. Remember, this is the Sledgehammah Showdown, with the perpetual sledgehammer trophy going to the winner. Kapolei won it last year after 38-0 victory at home.

7:27: We are about 20 minutes away from varsity kickoff. Kapolei won the JV game 20-8. Varsity teams are warming up. Campbell has new black jerseys and Kapolei has new white jerseys with black pants.

Darren Johnson makes his Campbell head coaching debut in his third stint at the varsity level. His first opponent is a tough one in Kapolei, which advanced to the state semifinals in the Open Division last season.
