GAME NIGHT 8/16: Waipahu/Leilehua

Mules take a knee and run out the clock.

Waipahu recovers the onside kick at its 47. Marques pressured into an incomplete pass. His deep ball is intercepted by Ethan Kuth at the Leilehua 23. :34 left.


Leilehua comes up with a strip sack and score, but it’s called back due to a facemask. Another penalty moves the ball to midfield. Failauga picks up 6, stopped for no gain, then a gain of 10. Marques scrambles for 12 to the 22. On third-and-10, Failauga gets loose and takes in from 22 yards out. TOUCHDOWN. PAT run failed. There’s the first score allowed by the Leilehua defense this season with :50 left in the game. Failauga with 186 yards on 39 carries.

Kekoa Turnagan in at QB for Leilehua. Kawela Kaluhiokalani picks up 15 yards on his first three carries of the night. Personal foul moves the ball to the Waipahu 19. Drive stalls and a 31-yard field goal attempt is low and wide. Waipahu ball with 3:14 left.

Waipahu starts at its 25 and Marques is sacked for a loss of 13. Failauga gets 8 back but the Marauders punt. The return is muffed at the Leilehua 40. Mules take possession and have the ball a the Waipahu 45 after a targeting penalty. 6:45 left.

Leilehua starts at its 15 and gets some momentum with two first downs. But its short lived and the Mules punt for the fourth time in the second half. 7:44 left.

Waipahu takes over at the Waipahu 41 and gets a pass interference call on first down to move to the 26. Failauga dropped for a loss of 2 and Jashawn Wakefield with a sack for a loss of 11 and Waipahu punts.

Leilehua starts at its 20 after a touchback and goes three-and-out. Mules have minus-7 yards in total offense in the second half.

Leilehua starts at its 20. After a false start, Akagi’s pass over the middle is intercepted by Fuafiva Tulafale and his returns it 19 yards for a TOUCHDOWN. PAT good. 0:56 Q3.

Kiaka Pio drops Failauga for a loss of 3 and Kalani Atwood sacks Marques for a 7-yard loss to bring up another Waipahu punt.

Mules’ start the drive with an 8-yard loss and are forced to punt again. Waipahu ball at its 30 with 2:59 left in the third quarter.

Waipahu starts at its 44. On second down Marques is intercepted by Acohido at the Leilehua 35.

Leilehua starts its first possession of the second half at its 13 with 6:30 left in the quarter. Mules go three and out.

Waipahu starts the second half at its 22. Failauga picks up 8 on fourth-and-1 to get to midfield. On first-and-15 at the Leilehua 27, Marques is hit and fumbles. Mules recover but there’s a fumble on the return and Waipahu recovers at its 33. First down Marauders, albeit with a 40-yard loss. Failauga gets the Marauders to midlfield, but after three incomplete passes, Waipahu punts after 15 plays.

Marques takes a high snap and goes up the middle to run out the clock. Through 10 quarters, Leilehua has yet to give up a point. Failauga has 96 rushing yards for Waipahu, the rest of the offense has accounted for (-11).


Akagi scrambles to his left and finds Landyn Jumawan for a 16-yard completion to the Waipahu 40. Intentional grounding moves it back to the Leilehua 47. After a 6-yard completion, Mules punt with 19 seconds left.

Waipahu starts at its 37. Failauga picks up 7 on fourth and 4 to keep the drive going. After three more runs, Waipahu faces fourth-and-6 at the Leilehua 46. Marques keeps it around the left side and is stopped short. Leilehua ball with 1:45 left in the half.

Leilehua starts at its 40. Akagi to Ramos for 15. Ramos then takes a reverse for 12 yards to the Waipahu 35. Mules march to the 14 where they face fourth-and-2. Encroachment gives Leilehua first and goal at the 9. On second down, Akagi to Ramos on the left side. Ramos fights into the end zone for a 10-yard TOUCHDOWN. PAT good. 4:53 Q2.

Touchback and Waipahu starts at its 20. Failauga adds another 14 yards on two carries. He’s dropped for a loss of 1 on his next carry. On third down the Mules pressure Marques into an incomplete pass. Marauders punt.

Leilehua loses 8 yards on an option pitch. Facing fourth and 13, Mules draw a pass interference call to bring up fourth-and-3 at the 11. Timeout Leilehua. Joseph Edwards drills a 30-yard FIELD GOAL. 10:24 Q2.

Waipahu starts at its 20 after a touchback. Failauga picks up 11 yards. On second and 15, Marques is sacked again and fumbles. Jaku Hanohano-Baptista recovers for Leilehua at the Waipahu 18.

Leilehua punts and Waipahu takes over at its 31. Mules push the Marauders back with two sacks and the punt snap goes into the end zone. Cy Acohido recovers for the Leilehua TOUCHDOWN. PAT good. :03 Q1.

Waipahu starts at its 44. Failauga goes for 26 then picks up another 10. He fumbles for a loss of 4 but gets it back. Failauga for 4 yards and another 3 to get to 54 for the night and tie Vavae Malepeai’s all-time rushing record. Failauga up the middle for another 4 and the record is his. Waipahu at the Mules 3 and Failauga is stopped short on fourth down.

Akagi finds Jayzon Ramos for 18 yards on third-and-16. After two runs, Akagi to Vitale Afoa for a 4-yard TOUCHDOWN. PAT blocked. 6:58 Q1.

Waipahu takes over at its 16. Alfred Failauga picks up 11 yards on his first carry and 4 on the next. On third and 11 and high snap gets away from QB Cody Marques and Leilehua recovers at the Waipahu 17.

Ethan Kuth returns the opening kick 36 yards to the Leilehua 42. Leilehua QB Kalei Akagi completes his first pass for 12 yards  and another for 5. Drive stalls at the Waipahu 44 and the Mules punt.

Waipahu wins the toss and defers. Leilehua will receive the opening kickoff.


Leilehua wins the JV game 27-13.
