GAME NIGHT 11/11: ‘Iolani/Campbell

The second game of a semifinal doubleheader at Mililani in the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Football Championships pits Campbell against ‘Iolani.

HISTORY: ‘Iolani leads the series 2-1 in the Prep Bowl and state championship eras. The Raiders beat the Sabers 24-6 in the Division II state semifinals in 2008 while Campbell beat ‘Iolani 28-7 in the 2004 state final.

10:47: GAME OVER.

10:45: Ulufale scores from 1-yard out. 2-point pass fails.
>> ‘IOLANI 35, CAMPBELL 12. 19 seconds left in game.

10:39: Sabers knocking on the door after a series of runs by Ulufale. They’re at the 1 with 42 seconds left.

10:35: Campbell driving into ‘Iolani territory.

10:27: ‘Iolani punts.

10:22: Campbell punts … and now ‘Iolani will be punting.

10:12: After one first down, the Raiders punt it away.

10:11: THIRD QUARTER ENDS.

10:01: Faumui rips off a 31-yard run to the ‘Iolani 1. On the next play, Abellanida hits Markus Ramos with a 1-yard TD pass. The conversion attempt pass failed.
>> ‘IOLANI 35, CAMPBELL 6. 1:42 left in third quarter.

9:57: Second half underway. Campbell punts. ‘Iolani punts.

9:32: HALFTIME.

9:29: Mizutani rolls right and throws back to his left for a 3-yard TD connection with Kaneshiro. Minami kicks his fifth extra point.
>> ‘IOLANI 35, CAMPBELL 0. 19 seconds to go in the first half.

9:27: A 15-yard penalty is called against the Raiders, who face a first and goal from the 20. On the next play, Mizutani hits Justin Genovia for a 17-yard pickup to the 3.

9:24: On a fourth-down play, Minami kicks a 28-yard field goal, but a penalty is called on Campbell, giving the Raiders a first down. The 3 points come off the board.

9:19: The Raiders’ ball-hawking continues as Makana LaBoy intercepts an Abellanida pass.

9:15: A pass interference penalty against Campball moves the ball to the 5, and two plays later, Pascua scores from 1 yard out. Minami kicks his fourth extra point.\
>> ‘IOLANI 28, CAMPBELL 0. 3:04 left in the first half.


9:11: A 15-yard penalty moves ball to the Campbell 21. Then, Pascua is nearly tackled in the backfield, but makes a spin move and gains 11 yards to the 10.

9:08: Three plays into Campbell’s next possession, Ulufale throws a pass that is intercepted by Kaua Nishigaya.

9:04: Five plays later, Jonah Miyazawa catches a Mizutani 7-yard TD pass. Minami adds the extra point.
>> ‘IOLANI 21, CAMPELL 0. 6:21 left in the first half.

9:01: The turnover fest continues as ‘Iolani’s Kyler Mento intercepts a Kawika Ulufale pass.

8:58: Nagami catches a Mizutani pass and is hit by Jeremiah Leaeno and fumbles. The ball is recovered by Campbell’s Noah Empron.

8:54: ‘Iolani’s punt bounces off of a Campbell player’s back and the Raiders’ Isaac Anderson recovers as the Sabers’ 34.

8:53: FIRST QUARTER ENDS.

8:50: A Mizutani pass to Justin Genovia covers 20 yards and the Raiders are driving.

8:44: One Abellanida pass to Mailei and two to Vernon Etrata-Daite gets the ball to the ‘Iolani 31, but a bad pitch leads to a 9-yard loss and Campbell eventually punts.

8:41: Instead of punting, Tyrese Tafai takes a short snap and runs for a first down with a 4-yard pickup.

8:39: After a 10-yard pass from Dustin Abellanida to Fangaima Mailei for a first down, Campbell’s offense stalls and will be punting.

8:34: Campbell’s second personal foul penalty advances the ball to the Sabers 4. On the next play, KJ Pascua goes up the middle for a 4-yard TD run. Minami adds the exra point.
>> ‘IOLANI 14, CAMPBELL 0. 6:52 left in first quarter.

8:32: After the punt, Tyrese Fafai recovers a fumble for Campbell, but the Raiders get the ball back deep in Sabers territory on a fumble recovery by Jonah Buchanan

8:25: Tasi Faumui gains 8 yards on first down for the Sabers, but they now face a third and 2. Darius Cambe is stopped for no gain on third down and a punt is upcoming.

8:24: Campbell wearing brand-new orange uniforms.

8:22: Mizutani takes a deep drop and hits Rayden Kaneshiro in the end zone for a 29-yard touchdown. Evan Minami makes the extra-point kick.
>> ‘IOLANI 7, CAMPBELL 0, 9:25 left in first quarter.


8:16: Tai-John Mizutani completes three passes, including two to Brent Nagami, to bring the ball to the Sabers 40.

8:13: Campbell just kicked off to ‘Iolani. Raiders to start at their own 29.

    What’s wrong with being oia fan boy? What qualified Iolani(3seed) to be a higher seed then Baldwin(4seed)? It sure is hell wasn’t their league record. Although Baldwin is not considerd a leauge champ, they had a better record coming to D1, who the hell is “we all”?
