Punahou, Kamehameha turn down chance to play at Aloha Stadium, TV coverage

By Paul Honda on April 8, 2021

For safety’s sake, Wendell Look wanted to see exhibition football games between private schools played at Aloha Stadium. Following a cancelled football year in Hawaii, it would have been nostalgic. Memorable. Epic, maybe. Instead, the ‘Iolani co-Athletic Director saw his intricately assembled plan come to a halt. Of all the plans laid out by the ILH’s football coordinator since last summer, this one wasn’t dependent on entities outside the private-school league. It wasn’t even at the mercy of the league, […]

ILH football: One more delay, new start date is Mar. 15

By Paul Honda on February 22, 2021

The delay of football in the ever-shifting timeline of prep sports in Hawaii is no surprise. The Interscholastic League of Honolulu’s start date of the postponed football season was scheduled for today — Feb. 22 — but has been delayed to Mar. 15. The league had already cancelled most fall and winter sports. While public-school leagues cancelled football in January, the ILH remained persistent and consistent about keeping the sport alive in an academic year altered severely by the COVID-19 […]

ON THIS DATE IN 1988: Iolani’s John Stephens succeeds after switch

By Jerry Campany on October 15, 2020

On this date in 1988, Iolani coach Eddie Hamada prioritized offense over defense and both units benefitted. Hamada gave John Stephens his first start at quarterback and Iolani shocked Kamehameha 24-0. Stephens started at linebacker through the Raiders’ 0-5 start to the ILH season and sprinkled in some action at quarterback in relief of Kaala Shea. He passed for a touchdown and ran for another in his first start, lofting a 25-yard pass to Michael Pila for a touchdown on […]

ON THIS DATE IN 1945: Kamehameha rues Iolani’s return

By Jerry Campany on October 13, 2020

Iolani returned to the ILH after sitting out three years during World War II and didn’t take long to make an impact. On this date in 1945, coach Father Bray and all-star center Edward Hamada called on a couple of backups to make big plays and the Raiders stunned Kamehameha 14-0 in front of 12,000 fans at Honolulu Stadium. Bray countered Kamehameha’s superior size with frequent substitutions and it led to a surprising shutout of one of the league’s favorites. […]

Former ‘Iolani RB Ka‘ua Nishigaya relishes new opportunity

By Paul Honda on August 10, 2020

On Thursday, Ka‘ua Nishigaya’s life will change. He will board a red-eye flight for the West Coast. After two more connecting flights and a 90-minute drive, Nishigaya will set his feet on the firm terrain of Yankton, S.D. It was Yankton that was once the jewel of the Dakota Territory, which encompassed both Dakota states and Wyoming. Mount Mary University is a gem in the town of 15,000. Nishigaya, once a bulldozing running back and wrestler at ‘Iolani, is joining […]

ALMOST FAMOUS: 2001 Iolani Raiders

By Jerry Campany on July 1, 2020

Hawaii Prep World will highlight 10 of the best football teams in Oahu history that never earned a division, league or state crown. For a team to be on this list, it inevitably had to have suffered an upset loss that probably lived with the players and coaches for a long time. Teams are ranked by positive point differential, excluding the 2010 Kahuku and 2018 St. Francis squads that had games wiped out due to the use of an ineligible […]

‘Iolani standout Lanakila Pei ponders offer from Hawaii

By Paul Honda on January 28, 2020

For months, even years, ‘Iolani’s Lanakila Pei hoped for a chance to play Division I college football. In the span of one week, his dream has become reality and then some. He visited Washington, the alma mater of his parents, and came home with a preferred walk-on opportunity. Then, on Monday, Hawaii made him a scholarship offer. The Warriors had been in communication with Pei for two years. Pei moved from safety to linebacker during that time to help the […]
