GAME NIGHT 10/20: Kahuku/Campbell

The first game of the OIA semifinals at Aloha Stadium on Friday night is a rematch of No. 2 Kahuku’s 45-6 win over No. 7 Campbell just three weeks ago.

A nice 28-yard run by the freshman, Manuma, who is getting some quality playing time in his first game at varsity.

Mahe down on the field after his fourth carry of the evening for 66 yards. He can’t put any pressure on his left leg. Wes Alo-Maiava fumbles on his first carry and Tyrese Tafai recovers for Campbell.

Campbell goes three-and-out with Kaipo back in at QB.

Kahuku will start the fourth quarter first-and-10 on the Campbell 37 after the punt. Sione Mahe 55-yard TD run. 42-7. Running clock.

Punt downed on the Campbell 5. Manuma remains in at QB and keeps it for 9 yards. He gets the first down on the short run on third-and-1. Third-and-3 and Kapule-Si’ilata with the sack. Campbell punt.

Maiava called for an unsportsmanlike penalty. Alapa in at QB. Not sure what happened. Handoff to Sione Mahe for a loss of 1 and Maiava back in. Red Raiders three-and-out.

Campbell ball on its 32. Manuma in at QB and his first throw is picked off. Another pick by Fonoimoana-Vaomu near midfield.

Sabers will start on their 34. Kaipo hit as he throws and the ball falls into the hands of big Samson Kapule-Si’ilata, who returns it 33 yards for a TD.

Red Raiders first-and-10. Maiava completes a third-and-4 pass to Tongi for 14 yards and then Nawahine with a 44-yard TD run. 11 carries, 118 yards, 2 TD for Nawahine. 28-7, 6:11.

Sabers ball at midfield. Third-and-13 and Kaipo rolls out to his right and hits Vernon Etrada-Daite for 21 yards and a first down. Third-and-10 and Kaipo hits Jalen Henderson for 9 yards to the 23. Fourth-and-1 and Campbell calls timeout. Sabers bring in freshman Peter Manuma, who was just called up from JV, at QB and he runs it for 3 yards and a first down. Kaipo back in and he’s PICKED OFF by Alex Fonoimoana-Vaomu, who brings it back 90 yards for a TD but flag on the play. Ball brought back to the Kahuku 21.

Red Raiders will start on their 18. A 3-yard run by Nawahine is followed up by two incomplete passes. One was a drop but wouldn’t have gone for a first down anyway. Punt.

Kahuku will receive to start the second half. Big swing late in the first half on the INT by Atuaia and the excellent two-minute drive with no timeouts by Maiava.

Kahuku ball on its 34. Pass to Alapa for 16 yards as he gets away from a defender. Two more complete passes for Maiava, who is then nearly picked off again by Tauai, who drops the INT. Maiva hits Nawahine for 10 yards and then Heffernan for 13 yards as he’s tackled at the 1. Clock ticking and Maiava hits a wide-open Heffernan for a 1-yard TD pass with 22 seconds remaining. 21-7. Huge turn of events. Nice drive there from Sol-Jay.

Just a 16-yard punt straight up into the air and Campbell takes over on the Kahuku 36. Pass over the middle is picked off. Atuaia again. Three sacks, four tackles for loss and now a pick in the first half.

Red Raiders start on their 27. Bad snap and it’s a loss of 6 as Maiava is taken down in the backfield. Maiava underthrows an open man over the middle and it’s third-and-16. Wind is really causing havoc out there. Maiava throws a deep ball out of bounds and Kahuku is three-and-out.

Bad snap on the punt as the punter was really deep and Campbell takes over on the Kahuku 14. Third-and-5 after a 5-yard completion to Ursua. Kahuku uses its final timeout. Third-and-5 and Kaipo finds an open Adkins-Kupukaa over the middle and he does the rest. Touchdown Campbell. After all of that, it’s 14-7, 3:48, Q2.

Kahuku ball on its 10 after a penalty. Red Raiders pick up a first down on a completion to Sitaleki Tongi but Maiava isn’t ready for the snap on third-and-2 and Nawahine tries to pick it up and run to the outside but loses 2. Kahuku will punt.

A false start and a sack by Ah You, his second, and Kahuku’s eighth force a three-and-out although Kaipo did complete both throws for 12 yards.

Kaonohi Kaniho with a 41-yard punt return into Campbell territory but he’s whistled for an unsportsmanlike penalty. Kahuku starts on its 44. Maiava completes two passes for 23 yards but a bad throw off his back foot is picked off by sophomore Jeremiah Tauai.

Short pass over the middle to an open Tyrese Tafai, who turns upfield for 16 yards. Nalu Emerson is down on the play after Tafai plows into two defenders. He’s up and off but Kahuku’s bench whistled for an unsportsmanlike penalty. Ball on the Kahuku 31. Draeton Thompson with sack No. 7 for a loss of 1. Third-and-11 and Atuaia on the blitz picks up his third sack. Sabers punt.

A 28-yard return on the kickoff out to the 46 by Adkins-Kupukaa. Good starting field position for Campbell. Feso Malufau ends the first quarter with Kahuku’s sixth sack. Untouched on the blitz.

Kahuku ball on its 38. Timeout for an injured Campbell player after Nawahine runs for 2. DL Zavius Cadelinia has to be helped off. Diving attempt on the deep ball is incomplete. Third-and-8. Pocket breaks down and Maiava scrambles out to his left for 16 yards. Timeout Kahuku. That’s five timeouts called in the first quarter. Nawahine with the handoff and he breaks free — SPIN MOVE — and he is gone. 44-yard TD run. 14-0, :45.

Sabers on their 18. Another deep ball try and another PI on Kahuku. Atuaia on the blitz and he gets his second sack and third TFL already. Holding on Kahuku but the play counts. I don’t think that’s right, but we play on. Timeout Campbell. Weirdness all around. I think Darren called timeout for an explanation. We’re back and Kahuku jumps offsides. Ah You with a sack for a 6-yard loss. Half the Campbell O-line didn’t even move. Campbell with its first positive-yardage play as Kaipo hits Jacob Smith for 11 yards over the middle. Clock winding down, more confusion and Campbell uses its final timeout with 2:23 left in the first quarter. Third-and-3. Kaipo eludes the initial rush but is then sacked by Samson Reed to force a punt.

Kahuku starts on its 45. Maiava high on a throw and is now 1-for-4 for 10 yards. Another incomplete pass on third-and-6 and Kahuku will punt.

After a delay of game, lot of confusion on the Campbell side. Sabers try a handoff to Joshua Salvido but he is ROCKED by Miki Ah You as soon as he touches the ball for a 5-yard loss. Timeout Sabers. Deep ball from Kaipo is on the money to Pokii Adkins-Kupukaa but a great play to bat it away by Kaluna Nihipali. Another deep ball and Kahuku gets called for pass interference. Bad snap and Kaipo corrals it quickly and is sacked by Lauina Falatea. Campbell with minus-30 total yards after two drives.

A 26-yard punt gives Kahuku the ball on its 32. Sophomore Sol-Jay Maiava at QB. RB Enoch Nawahine gets the first handoff for 4 yards. Play-action pass and Maiava is way high with his first throw. Third-and-6. Maiava with a sharp throw to Thorton Alapa for 10 yards to move the chains. After a delay of game, Maiava keeps on the option but a great tackle by LB Tyrese Tafai for no gain. Nearly another delay of game forces a timeout and Makoa Freitas doesn’t look happy. Maiava on the keep picks up 16 yards to the 7. Nawahine will have a TD run called back by an obvious hold.

Campbell will receive to start the game. Sabers start on their 20 with Krenston Kaipo, the senior, at QB. First snap is high over the head of Kaipo. He grabs it for a loss of 14 as Fatu Atuaia cleans it up for a tackle for loss. Kaipo is then nearly sacked for a safety but just stretches out past the goal line. Atuaia with a sack and the junior Nalu Emerson drops a possible pick-six. Ugly start for Campbell, which loses 19 yards on three plays. A 16-yard run by Toalei Lefau right up the gut sets up Nawahine from the 3 but he’s stopped at the 1. Fourth-and-goal. Lefau dives into the end zone for the 1-yard TD run. 7-0 Red Raiders, 6:38.
