Diamond beat Waianae’s Sheldon Bailey 15-4 in his final and Corbett shut out Mililani’s Marquis Dominique 9-0 in his. Ludiazo beat Radford’s John Patrick 6-4. Josh Gallarde of Campbell probably won the toughest bracket, beating Mililani’s Isaac Diamond, Pearl City’s Makoa Cooper and Aaron […]

WRE: Kamehameha girls still have edge

By Nick Abramo on January 24, 2015

The Kamehameha girls wrestling team defeated Punahou 45-27 at an ILH meet at Mid-Pacific on Friday. The defending state champion Kamehameha girls were without Cadet world champion Teshya Alo, who was at a judo awards ceremony elsewhere. Shaylin Marn of the Warriors, an ILH contender at 122 pounds, defeated Pac-Five’s Bryndall McAluney in an exhibition match. “She is a third-year wrestler,” Kamehameha coach Bill Vanenciano said. “She plays water polo and runs cross country and has exceptional fitness. She’s an […]

Pascua’s victory highlights MPI meet

By Nick Abramo on January 23, 2015

‘Iolani’s KJ Pascua likes his end game. The Raiders wrestler said the way he finishes matches has made the difference in his three close encounters against Pac-Five’s Cole Chandler in the 145-pound class. “I felt like I kind of wore him out,” Pascua said after his 10-8 overtime win over Chandler on Friday night at the Mid-Pacific gym. “I was able to capitalize by pushing a little more at the end. “We are pushing it all the way to the […]

Kamehameha’s challenge: maintaining hunger

By Nick Abramo on January 9, 2015

For the Kamehameha girls wrestling team, there are high expectations this season after the Warriors won the state title a year ago. It helps to have junior Teshya Alo, the reigning FILA Cadet world champion, leading the way. She is also a two-time state champion. For head coach Bill Vanenciano and assistant Chris West, keeping the girls focused and ready is the top priority. The Warriors have been tested early. They placed second to Campbell at the Hawaii Wrestling Officials […]

By Nick Abramo on December 28, 2014

Razor close. Campbell’s Tristan Ludiazo and Lahainaluna’s Conor Mowat have waged two wars already early in the wrestling season. Ludiazo, the defending state champion in the 220-pound class, beat Mowat twice by a single point in ultimate tiebreakers at 285 pounds. In both matches (the Maui Invitational and the Hawaii Wrestling Association Officials Scholarship Tournament), the two were tied after the three regulation periods and three overtime periods, and Ludiazo earned the escape point twice in the ultimate tiebreaker. According […]

Mililani’s Diamond enjoying a good start

By Nick Abramo on December 28, 2014

Mililani’s Zack Diamond is off to a fast start in wrestling, but that means little over the long haul of the season. In the 138-pound class, Diamond has won the two tournaments he’s been in so far — the Garner Ivey Maui Invitational and the Hawaii Wrestling Officials Association Scholarship Tournament. A two-time state runner-up, Diamond wants to take it a step further and win it all this time in March at the Blaisdell Arena. Aside from being a legitimate […]
