LIVE BLOG: HHSAA Girls, opening round

By Paul Honda on March 6, 2015

The morning matches are underway as of roughly 10:15 a.m. here at Neal Blaisdell Arena. The HHSAA is providing results via its in-house computerized system and I’ll post all of it as I receive it here at the press table. Nothing yet as there are six mats in action, a six-ring circus of championship wrestling. A lot of talk — controversy? — regarding the plethora of elite wrestlers who are unseeded in this tourney for various reasons. But the one […]

Girls wrestling P4P, March 4

By Jerry Campany on March 4, 2015

IThe state won’t hand Teshya Alo and Lelelei Mataafa their third state crowns until Saturday, but they might as well. Alo won the ILH unopposed last week while Mataafa cruised to her third MIL title. Mataafa will need to win three matches for another state title and Alo will have four, but the question will be if anyone can keep them on the mat for longer than a minute. That is why they have been judged the top two female […]

Boys wrestling P4P, March 4

By Jerry Campany on March 4, 2015

The old adage that you can’t lose your spot to injury doesn’t apply to the pound-for-pound rankings. Mililani’s Zack Diamond slipped out of the top spot for the first time all season when he lost a close match to Waianae’s Sheldon Bailey in the semifinals of the OIA championships. Diamond suffered an injured knee in the bout and forfeited his next to matches to head into the state meet unseeded. He dropped to No. 4 with the loss. Kaiser’s Chance […]

OIA wrestling championships

By Jerry Campany on February 28, 2015

TThere are five reigning OIA champions in the gym on the boys side, but none of them have won states. The two state champions in the brackets, Kaiser’s Chance Ikei and Campbell’s Tristan Ludiazo, have never won OIAs. The toughest bracket looks like the 132-pound class, with OIA champions Liam Corbett of Leilehua and Isaac Diamond of Mililani, who won his OIA crown two years ago, joined by Ikei. Others going for a second OIA title are Kapolei’s Jayson Pagurayan […]
