Lahainaluna’s Kainalu Estrella jumped into the fourth spot of the latest pound-for-pound rankings, making him the highest ranked wrestler from Maui and best without a state title. Pearl City’s Fuamatu rises in P4P despite loss

Pearl City’s Jennie Fuamatu tested herself against the best and walked away better for it. Fuamatu, the reigning champion at 186 pounds, entered Kelani Corbett‘s realm at 168 and reached the final before falling 11-3 to the state’s No. 2-ranked wrestler. The match was closer than the score indicated, but the Mules’ pure wrestling skills and flawless game plan proved to be too much. Kahuku wrestler Teniya Alo has two main goals — make the U.S. Olympic wrestling team and beat her sister, Teshya. The boys and girls semifinals at the Officials tournament have finished at Leilehua High gym. There was a huge upset at 113 pounds with defending state champion and No. 4 pound-for-pound Kysen Terukina getting pinned by Baldwin freshman Kahilihiwa Joy. Joy went on to pin his opponent, unseeded Jude Michael Talana, in the final in 35 seconds. Loud cheers erupted at the Leilehua gym as Baldwin freshman Kahilihiwa Joy pinned Kamehameha’s Kysen Terukina in the semifinals of the Officials tournament. Joy was down 5-0 when he pulled off the pin of Terukina, who won the state championship at 113 pounds last season and is ranked No. 4 in Hawaii Prep World’s pound-for-pound rankings.
