GLORY DAYS: Coach Lincoln Barit and the 2019 Waialua Bulldogs

By Nick Abramo on July 8, 2019

14th IN A SERIES This summer, head coaches from all 28 Oahu high school varsity football teams are being asked to recount their football playing days. One coach interviewed for this multi-part series pointed out what he thinks may be the value of this endeavor: “A lot of times, you only hear about coaches when they’re getting released or are having a special season. It’s super hard to have a special season, so this should shed more light on them […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Waialua Bulldogs

By Jerry Campany on October 15, 2018

The Waialua Bulldogs have not hit a historical low just yet, going 0-9 this season after an 0-8 year in 2017. The Bulldogs have lost 18 in a row since winning the OIA Division II in a thrilling one-point win over Waipahu in 2016. The losing streak still has seven games to go to match the 25 in a row from 1996-98 under Harold Tavares and George Watanabe. It took Chico Cappello four years to dig out of the hole. […]

Pac-Five and Waialua enjoy puddle mania

By Nick Abramo on October 13, 2018

The Aiea football field was a sloppy mess late Friday afternoon, when Waialua and Pac-Five kicked off for their season-ending football game. The rain fluctuated between super hard and light and steady, and the field presented the players with conditions they don’t see often. Huge puddles and some mud. Considering the heaviness of the downpour, the field itself held up really well, even throughout the second game pitting ‘Iolani and Aiea, and it provided many spills and thrills. “That was […]

No JV football games for Kalaheo, Waialua

By Nick Abramo on August 29, 2018

The most recent schedule released by the OIA shows no games scheduled for the Kalaheo and Waialua junior varsity football teams. This is something new at Kalaheo and something that happens nearly every season at Waialua. At Kalaheo, varsity coach Darrell Poole is not throwing in the towel as far as the JV team goes. “We still have a JV team that is practicing, but there are barely 15 kids,” Poole said. “That’s not enough to play games (safely). There […]

Freshman Apau has bright future at Waialua

By Nick Abramo on October 6, 2017

A receiver was coming down with all the balls thrown to him — the ones right at him, the high ones, the low ones. It didn’t matter who was throwing it, either. Waialua’s Hunter Apau caught nine passes for 98 yards in a 47-7 season-ending loss to Roosevelt at Tosh Nakasone Field on Friday night. Four came from starting quarterback Justyce Lacar and five were from backup QB Kyler Dicion. Those three players represent the future of the Bulldogs’ offense. […]
