Maafala yearning for complete game by Warriors

By Paul Honda on September 21, 2018

On paper, it was a solid, sweet homecoming win for the Kamehameha Warriors. For head coach Abu Maafala, it was less than stellar. Kamehameha’s 32-21 win over Farrington featured a dominant first half. Kamehameha improved to 2-3 in ILH Open play (3-3 overall) with a hard-earned win. The sixth-ranked Warriors outgained No. 9 Farrington 301-14 en route to a 16-0 lead by intermission. The home team also was in control of the score, 32-7, early in the fourth quarter. What […]

By Paul Honda on September 20, 2018

The best — and closest — Open Division showdown involving defending state champion Saint Louis in the first half of the season was a zany exchange of big plays by Punahou’s offense, defense and special teams with the Crusaders’ uneven defensive performance. Then Crusaders defensive tackle Faatui Tuitele emerged with 9:01 to go in the second quarter, and everything changed. Down 21-14, the Crusaders took command of the line of scrimmage en route to a 35-28 victory at Aloha Stadium.

Q&A: Kaimuki ironman lineman Sama Paama

By Paul Honda on September 18, 2018

Sama Paama keeps things focused and basic. The 6-foot-4, 355-pound two-way lineman — and occasional placekicker — has learned what it takes to turn a dream into reality. Carve away the distractions. Eyes on the prize. It’s a tool of success that he learned during his years at Kaimuki High School. Next stop: Washington. For years, all he would think about was USC. Then he started drawing attention from Hawaii, Pac-12 schools, including USC, as well as Big 12 and […]

VIDEO: Moanalua improves to 4-0 with win over Leilehua

By Paul Honda on September 16, 2018

The OIA Division I showdown between Moanalua and No. 9-ranked Leilehua, two football teams unbeaten in league play, promised to be an offensive explosion. Instead, this turned into a battle in the trenches, the lowest-scoring game for the visiting Na Menehune and the host Mules. Led by defensive lineman Tupu Alualu, Moanalua limited one of the state’s top running backs, James McGary, to 12 yards on eight carries. Moanalua prevailed 23-10 to seize sole possession of first place.

Kekahuna’s 2 90-yard TD’s highlight St. Francis win

By Paul Honda on September 16, 2018

Before every game, Joseph Kekahuna has simple, but pertinent advice for grandson Shepherd Kekahuna. “Take no prisoners.” Kekahuna did exactly that, clutching up in a scoreless battle with a determined Pac-Five squad on Saturday afternoon at Aloha Stadium. The versatile, two-way Saint returned an interception 92 yards for a touchdown, and moments later, he broke off a 98-yard TD run. He finished with 110 rushing yards on five carries, and also caught three passes from Bubba Akana for 59 yards. […]
