On this date in 1932, young Yetsuo Higa added to his growing legend. Higa ran five miles in 30 minutes, 25.6 seconds to finish third in the annual Diamond Head run. The event was a largely military affair, but Higa helped his Leilehua Mules won the civilian trophy aided by teammates Raymond Chinen and Yunjo Tanaka. Six Mules finished in the top 25. Confidence in high school sports is fairly high for air riflery, Cross country, baseball, esports, golf, softball, tennis and track and field — despite the ongoing challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Hawaii Prep World polled dozens of coaches in spring and postponed fall sports. Memorial 5k event to honor 6-time Hawaii Fastest Human, Chad Miyamoto

Chad Miyamoto was in his groove as a sprinter, winning the Hawaii’s Fastest Human title six times. Miyamoto died on Sept. 17, just four months after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. “It was so sudden. Chenoa Frederick wins third Gatorade award

Kamehameha-Hawaii track and field standout Chenoa Frederick was named the Gatorade Hawaii athlete of the year despite not having a season. Frederick, who was inducted into the Hall of Honor last month, is the fist girl to win the award three times. She has eight gold medals in her career despite not competing in the state championships in her senior year. The newest class of the Hall of Honor was selected on Sunday, awarding each athlete a $2,000 scholarship from Enterprise. >> Nanea Estrella, Lahainaluna She is a four-time state champion in wrestling, the sixth girl in state history to do so and the second from Maui, joining Lahainaluna’s Lalelei Mataafa from 2016. On this date in 1944, the Medley relay not only took the spotlight at the Cornell Relays, it was the only game in town. McKinley beat Punahou with Roosevelt third and Kamehameha fourth in the event, which was run by itself three days after the competition was over. MAY 7, 1983: Koldene Walsh wills Leilehua to title

On this date in 1983, Koldene Walsh broke or tied records in the 100, 200 and long jump to lead Leilehua to the state track and field title. He also led his 400 relay team to a victory. The result didn’t surprise anyone, helping the Mules overcome Punahou and Radford. Punahou won the girls competition.

MAY 6, 1966: Kamehameha builds track and field force

On this day in 1966, Kamehameha was primed to show its stuff in track and field. There were no records broken in the trials, but the Warriors qualified full contingent. They beat Duncan MacDonald‘s Kailua squad by 18 points the next day to take the team crown.
