MAY 9, 1944: McKinley wins bizarre relay rematch

On this date in 1944, the Medley relay not only took the spotlight at the Cornell Relays, it was the only game in town.

McKinley beat Punahou with Roosevelt third and Kamehameha fourth in the event, which was run by itself three days after the competition was over.

The rematch was agreed to by all four coaches because Punahou’s Larry Doolittle got clobbered by a fan during the third leg during the first running, also won by McKinley and anchor man Herman Oliveira.

Doolittle suffered a broken thumb in the incident but ran the rematch and gave Punahou the lead.
