Kalaheo back on top with OIA D-II boys soccer title

By Nick Abramo on January 26, 2019

Kalaheo has a long and rich soccer history. The titles these days, however, are a lot fewer and farther between. The Mustangs cashed in on the OIA Division II boys championship with a 3-1 victory over Waialua on Saturday night at Kaiser Stadium for their first crown since 2013. Maybe the school is about to become serious contenders at the league and state D-II level every year. A year ago, the Mustangs made it to states but lost to eventual […]

The Raiders clinched a state tournament berth and will play at regular-season champion Punahou on Tuesday for the overall league crown. “We’ve just recently been hitting our stride as a team offensively and defensively and I feel […]

Saint Louis (8-2-2), which also won the regular-season title, will be the ILH’s lone representative in the eight-team HHSAA state tournament, which starts Feb. 7. “We got one (goal) done earlier this year, we got another one done now and we have […]

ILH coaches move quickly to simplify soccer schedule

By Nick Abramo on January 25, 2019

ILH soccer coaches were looking for a fix and they may get it quickly. The problem is an overload of matches to decide the league champion. It came to a head on Tuesday, when Kamehameha and ‘Iolani played for the girls title. Both coaches, Kristin Masunaga of the Raiders and Missy Moore of Kamehameha, were not thrilled that their teams were playing for the fourth time in seven days. It was, they told the media after the match, not an […]

Mililani holds off Kalani late to reach OIA final

By Nick Abramo on January 24, 2019

The field-goal kicker’s big moment didn’t quite add up to victory, but Mililani still found a way to get past Kalani 3-2 in the OIA boys soccer semifinals at Kaiser Stadium on Thursday night. Liam McGehee, who in the fall was a place-kicker for the state Open Division runner-up Trojans football team, put Mililani ahead 2-1 with about 11 minutes to go on a 50-yard free-kick blast that skimmed off the turf and bounded high into the left corner. Kalani, […]

By Nick Abramo on January 24, 2019

Kapolei was like a buzz saw Thursday night in a 5-1 romp over Kaiser in the OIA boys soccer semifinals at Kaiser Stadium. Overflowing with quickness, defense, creativity and flat-out speed, the Hurricanes will move on to the OIA championship on Saturday in the final against Mililani, which beat Kalani 3-2. “They’re a great team with a lot of experience,” Cougars coach Layne Abalos said about Kapolei. “I thought they were going to go far last year, but they lost […]

Kamehameha claims ILH girls soccer title in shootout

By Nick Abramo on January 22, 2019

When a professional golfer has an unspectacular day, with mostly pars, maybe a birdie or two and a bogey or two, writers can be quick to call it a “ho-hum” round. Those words are perfect for Tuesday’s ILH girls soccer championship match. Kamehameha won the title after a scoreless regulation and overtime by outshooting ‘Iolani 2-1 on penalty kicks. Even the PKs were lackluster. Of nine shots, only three went in the goal. Three were saved and three went wide. […]
