Punahou’s Johnnie Dodge wins Gatorade Award

Punahou midfielder Johnnie Dodge was named the Gatorade Hawaii Player of the Year on Monday after leading the Buffanblu to another state championship. Dodge, who was first-team all-state for the Star-Advertiser but lost out for player of the year to teammate Dominic Gusman, scored five goals — including the game-winner in the title match — and dished out four assists this season. The selection panel for the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s All-State boys soccer team is a steady bunch. Kamehameha senior Kalia Kalua, a fast and quick-striking forward, was picked as the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Player of the Year in girls soccer. Right behind in the voting by coaches and media around the state was smooth and dynamic midfielder Teani Arakawa of King Kekaulike. Punahou’s Dominic Gusman and Treyden Buder-Nakasone are the players of the year in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I boys soccer as voted on by the league’s coaches. The ILH coaches were in a sharing mood voting on their all-stars teams in girls soccer.
