Refs, recruiter color Bartenstein’s day

By Nick Abramo on January 29, 2015

For the most part, high school athletes are readily accessible for an interview immediately after a contest. Wednesday was just a bit different. The villain, so to speak, of the 1-1 ‘Iolani vs. Punahou soccer draw was already in discussion with somebody else. Zach Kingsley, the Chaminade University coach, was in the process of getting to know the Raiders’ Ronnie Bartenstein as a potential recruit. When that conversation was over and the media swooped in, Bartenstein, a solid center fullback, […]

This time, Punahou’s Toner hits the post

By Nick Abramo on January 24, 2015

J et Toner has an interesting nickname and a gifted right leg. Toner’s real first name is John, but he goes by Jet because those are the letters of his initials — John Edward Toner. The Punahou junior soccer striker did something on Saturday that he tried hard to avoid during football season, when he hit three long, pressure field goals in the postseason. Hitting the goalposts is not a good thing for a kicker in football, and if you […]

Is the OIA ready for another boys soccer game between rivals Kalani and Kaiser? Only Radford stands in its way. Defending OIA champion Kaiser drew the fifth seed in the upcoming OIA boys soccer tournament, forcing the Cougars to travel to Kahuku to take on Radford to return to states and reach the second round of the league tournament. And Kalani, which beat Kaimuki 9-0 behind two goals from Takahiro Kosins in the regular-season final, will be waiting there. Kaiser […]
