Saint Louis-Kailua, post-scrimmage

By Paul Honda on August 2, 2014

No big surprises at Kalaepohaku on Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders moved the ball efficiently and often through the air. Ryder Kuhns was sharp, getting the ball deep to Drew Kobayashi early, spreading the ball all over the field. The receivers are making the right reads and their QB is on point. Kailua’s back-to-glory-days offense is about smashmouth football. They had some nice breakaways, but for the most part kept working on the intricacies of the offense, mostly handoffs between the […]

Players all smiles as Lee Bros. grind away

By Paul Honda on August 2, 2014

Cal Lee and Ron Lee are back at it on the hill at Kalaepohaku. Just hours after a scrimmage with big, talented Kapolei, they were on the field again. Ron, the offensive coordinator, was there by 7 a.m., studying film from the scrimmage. Cal was there on the field just a little while later. By the time they were done with practice around 6 p.m. — with a certain Heisman Trophy candidate working out with the varsity — they were […]

Working out with Marcus

By Paul Honda on August 1, 2014

Not everybody gets to say they worked out with Heisman Trophy candidate Marcus Mariota at practice. Ask Marcus, and he’s probably going to say he was honored to work out at his alma mater. Saint Louis had, from all reports, a stellar performance against a talented Kapolei squad on Thursday. The Hurricanes ran fairly well, while the Crusaders let the pigskin fly with regularity, to nobody’s surprise. Ryder Kuhns to Drew Kobayashi deep. We’ll likely hear that a lot this […]

Q&A: Fred Ulu-Perry, Saint Louis OL

By Paul Honda on June 3, 2014

Here’s a Q&A with Saint Louis football/basketball player Fred Ulu-Perry. I asked about workouts and dedication. He answered everything, and I realized at some point that Fred is all about excellence, but he’s also about consistency. Watching him on the football field is one thing. He’s an All-State first-team offensive lineman. But on the basketball court, his agility, power and balance are really something unique for an athlete 6-2 and close to 300 pounds. Hawaii Prep World: The PIAA/Under Armour […]

Lee excited about return to Saint Louis

By Paul Honda on February 3, 2014

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu is as competitive, intense and, in some ways, cut-throat, as any Hawaii-based league imaginable. And that’s just in academics. Now put the most heralded prep coach in island history back in the saddle at Saint Louis, and football brains across the state might just explode. With Cal Lee back at Saint Louis (see Dave Reardon’s breaking story this afternoon on the Star-Advertiser site), that adds to some pretty huge football mind power in the ILH: […]

Poi Report: Sanchez commits to CU (update)

By Paul Honda on November 20, 2013

(9:30 p.m. Updated with quotes from Jaisen Sanchez.) At 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds, it wasn’t hard to find Jaisen Sanchez on the football field. The senior cornerback’s stellar season was icing on the cake for recruiters. Colorado liked him back in the summer, when Sanchez participated in the All-Poly Camp. The Buffaloes offered him a scholarship then, and Sanchez reciprocated this week by orally committing to play for CU. “I’m 100 percent committed to Colorado,” Sanchez said on Wednesday night. […]

Video: #3 Kamehameha vs. #4 Saint Louis

By Paul Honda on October 25, 2013

Part 1 Part 2 This nail-biter ended the season for the loser, and that turned out to be the team with more turnovers and penalties. Kamehameha advanced to the ILH playoff final with a hard-earned 34-28 win.

Update: Kamehameha 34, Saint Louis 28, Final

By Paul Honda on October 19, 2013

Kamehameha RB Brandon Kahookele is out. He’s wearing a knee brace and not dressed for the game. I’m told he will have his left knee looked at (MRI) later. Could be a huge loss for the Warriors. First quarter A huge pass play from Ryder Kuhns to Devan Stubblefield put the Crusaders in the red zone. Adam Noga scored on a short run off right tackle. Saint Louis 7, Kamehameha 0. 5:36 – T.J. Fitzsimmons drills a 41-yard field goal […]
