Nerdpod: Receivers v4.0

By Paul Honda on October 20, 2016

NERDPOD: Receivers v4.0 Hawaii Prep World’s Paul Honda breaks down some of the best pass catchers in the state. The regular season has drawn its curtain across the islands, but I’ll be adding more pass catchers to this list until the playoffs and state tourney are done, and maybe past that, too. This week, five additions. Numbers are nice, but seeing how they reflect a player’s season is usually intriguing. Even players who don’t have statistics that scratch the ceiling […]

Lee hopes to coach Friday prior to surgery

By Paul Honda on October 19, 2016

He’s been a healthy, strong person for all his life. That’s why Cal Lee’s health issue is shocking for his staff, players and fans across the state. Lee missed last week’s game between his Saint Louis Crusaders and ‘Iolani because of kidney stones. The longtime football coach is taking medication to heal an infection in the kidneys, and is scheduled to have surgery next week (Oct. 28). “The stone is too big,” he said on Wednesday afternoon. “It’s not going […]

‘Puns’ vs. ‘Saints’ a Top 10 national game

By Nick Abramo on October 19, 2016

The Punahou vs. Saint Louis football game on Friday night at Aloha Stadium is considered a Top 10 game nationally by CBS MaxPreps. The winner will be the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion and likely earn a better seeding and a bye in the first round of the inaugural Open division state tournament. Punahou (7-1) topped Saint Louis (7-1) 33-20 at Aloha Stadium on Sept. 29 to even the season series at 1-1. The Crusaders beat the Buffanblu 64-44 on […]

Saint Louis defense makes statement

By Christian Shimabuku on October 14, 2016

Known for its high-octane offense and gaudy numbers on that side of the ball, Saint Louis can make some plays on defense, too. The Crusaders forced four ‘Iolani turnovers and had a goal-line stand in the game’s closing seconds, giving the Raiders their first shutout since 2013 in a 33-0 win. “All credit to the boys, they just played hard,” acting head coach Wes Tufaga said. “They did their responsibilities and ran to the ball and did everything we expected.” […]

GAME NIGHT 10/14: ‘Iolani/Saint Louis

By Hawaii Prep World on October 14, 2016

Seven games with major state tournament implications in most are on tap tonight on Oahu. No. 3 Saint Louis (6-1, 5-1 ILH D-I) can clinch a spot in the Open Division of the state tournament with a win over ‘Iolani (3-6, 0-6) coupled with a Punahou win over Kamehameha. Saint Louis QB Tua Tagovailoa, who is 553 passing yards behind career state record holder Timmy Chang, set a school record with 493 passing yards in the last meeting between the […]

Lee vs. Look: A battle of legends

By Jerry Campany on October 14, 2016

Every time Cal Lee and Wendell Look shake hands following a football game, another record is set. The Saint Louis coach has the most wins of any high school coach in Hawaii, and the ‘Iolani boss is fourth behind legends Larry Ginoza (189) of Waianae and Kamehameha’s Cal Chai (186). If your lone criteria is career wins, Look joins those legends on Hawaii’s Mount Rushmore of coaches. When they lead their teams onto the field in Friday’s ILH playoff game, […]

Cal Lee recovering well after surgery

By Nick Abramo on October 10, 2016

A lot of people were wondering why head coach Cal Lee missed No. 1 Saint Louis’ 21-7 victory over Kamehameha on Saturday. According to his brother, assistant coach Ron Lee, Cal Lee had a kidney stones problem. Ron Lee added that Cal had surgery on Monday and was in the recovery room in the afternoon. “I spoke with his son and from what he tells me Cal is doing well,” Ron Lee told Hawaii Prep World via cellphone Monday afternoon. […]

Crusaders get reality check heading into tourney

By Billy Hull on October 8, 2016

A card draw following a 21-7 win over Kamehameha on Friday night at Aloha Stadium gave Saint Louis the No. 1 seed and Punahou the No. 2 seed entering the ILH tournament beginning next Friday. The cards went Saint Louis’ way, but based on recent play on the field, Punahou looks like the favorite to take home the ILH crown. For the second straight game, Saint Louis’ offense struggled uncharacteristically with senior Tua Tagovailoa at quarterback. The Alabama commit was […]
