VIDEO: Saint Louis vs. Punahou highlights

By Paul Honda on September 20, 2018

The best — and closest — Open Division showdown involving defending state champion Saint Louis in the first half of the season was a zany exchange of big plays by Punahou’s offense, defense and special teams with the Crusaders’ uneven defensive performance. Then Crusaders defensive tackle Faatui Tuitele emerged with 9:01 to go in the second quarter, and everything changed. Down 21-14, the Crusaders took command of the line of scrimmage en route to a 35-28 victory at Aloha Stadium.

Defense leads No. 5 Punahou over No. 3 Mililani

By Nick Abramo on September 9, 2018

The Punahou defense did exactly what it needed to do to slow down Mililani’s offense in Saturday night’s 43-21 victory at the Trojans’ John Kauinana Stadium. The Buffanblu (3-1, 3-1 ILH Open) wound up sacking star quarterback Dillon Gabriel six times, including three by another guy with the first name of Dillon — Dillon Lundberg. In the defensive backfield, Trent Shiraki came up with two of his team’s three interceptions of Gabriel. No. 3 Mililani (3-2, 1-0 OIA Open) is […]

Q&A: Punahou’s Kale Ane talks Mililani showdown

By Paul Honda on September 8, 2018

It’s not Saint Louis-Kahuku, but Mililani-Punahou is as potent a game as it gets otherwise. Saturday’s showdown between the visiting Buffanblu and the host Trojans at John Kauinana Stadium promises to have all the combustible elements necessary for an epic, high-scoring, pinball-machine battle. Which, naturally, means that fans might end up with the opposite. Both defenses are equipped with athletic, smart and experienced returnees. Punahou showed its ground attack in a 40-14 win at Farrington. Mililani, back home after a […]

Punahou’s 1-2 punch at running back tough to deal with

By Nick Abramo on September 2, 2018

Punahou quarterback Hugh Brady passed 50 times in Saturday’s 40-14 victory over Farrington. A casual fan might think that the Buffanblu are all about the aerial game, but that is wrong. No. 5 Punahou has a real-deal backfield, with the nimble Vincent Terrell and the smashmouth Sitiveni Kaufusi. So while Brady was throwing for 290 yards on a somewhat erratic night in which he completed 19 of those 50 passes, Terrell and Kaufusi were lighting it up on the ground. […]

Punahou’s big blue wall stifles Farrington

By Paul Honda on September 1, 2018

Punahou’s defensive unit wastes no lessons, to be sure. In the fifth-ranked Buffanblu’s 40-14 win over Farrington at Skippa Diaz Stadium on Saturday, the Buffanblu stuffed the box and provided tight press coverage from beginning to end. Farrington’s offense mustered seven first downs all night, including two by penalty. Linebacker Maninoa Tufono wasn’t surprised by Farrington’s power up front, but the Buffanblu defense was ready. Over and over, they read Farrington’s play-action schemes perfectly, sometimes covering pass catchers before the […]
