By Paul Honda on April 1, 2019

At 6 feet, 5 inches and 260 pounds, Maceal Afaese usually stands out in a crowded room. Afaese stood out a little more over the weekend at the Polynesian Bowl Showcase in Las Vegas. His performance earned him an invitation to the 2020 Polynesian Bowl. Lil clip from today, but had a great time at the Poly Bowl Combine🤙🏾. By Paul Honda on January 17, 2019

The stars have aligned for Team Mauka. What more could they want? When the Polynesian Hall of Fame Bowl kicks off on Saturday night at Aloha Stadium, the team in red will have phenom passer Taulia Tagovailoa at quarterback. The former Kapolei record-breaker is enthused about his offense, which includes pass catchers who are commits to Alabama, Ohio State and Oregon. “Patrick Mahomes. Everybody knows Patrick Mahomes. This is Taulia Mahomes,” said wide receiver DeMarco Hellams of DeMatha Catholic (Md.), […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Kapolei Hurricanes

By Jerry Campany on October 26, 2018

The Kapolei Hurricanes probably knew that competing in the Open Division might bring some struggles, but the Hurricanes suffered their first losing season since 2014. The numbers say there was not as much of a difference between this edition of Hurricanes and some of the past ones. Kapolei averaged 19.2 points per game, its lowest since 2014 but only a few points lower than last year’s 21.6. While the offense did its usual thing, the defense was victimized by the […]

Kapolei’s season comes down to coin flip

By Brian McInnis on October 20, 2018

After a 33-13 loss at Kahuku on Friday night, the Kapolei Hurricanes’ season stands upon the edge of a coin. The Hurricanes (3-7 overall, 1-4 OIA Open Division) fell into a three-way tie with Farrington and Waianae for the last of four spots for the OIA Open Division playoffs. A coin flip, or flips, will determine which of those three teams faces OIA top seed Mililani. Coach Darren Hernandez gathered his players upon the Carleton E. Weimer field right after […]

Mililani (7-2, 5-0) will be sitting pretty with a bye for the next two weeks before they play a league semifinal game on the weekend of Oct. 26-27. For Kapolei, it’s desperation time. The Hurricanes (3-5 overall) are sitting at 1-2 in […]
