Endurance, eligibility are huge keys for Kaimuki’s ironmen

By Paul Honda on June 24, 2021

The 18 Bulldogs showing up daily for conditioning know the task is daunting. Such is the way at Kaimuki, where low numbers, big hearts and ultimate resilience have been the norm for years. Coach David Tautofi has lined up scrimmages with Kahuku, Campbell, Kailua and Saint Louis — not exactly an easy route for any program, let alone one in Division II. Tautofi’s approach has yielded big dividends for the Bulldogs. In 2019, they won the OIA D-II title and […]

Kaimuki three-sport standout Koby Moananu enters Hawaii Hall of Honor

By Paul Honda on June 2, 2021

An unexpected and wonderful thing happened as Koby Moananu pondered his future during a global pandemic. Question marks, cancellation of his sports — baseball, then football and, finally, basketball — generated maximum concern for the talented senior. Then, after a rough baseball season for the Kaimuki Bulldogs, Moananu learned that he had been voted into the Hawaii Hall of Honor. “I feel like it’s a huge honor to be in the Hall. My parents always kept me focused and helped […]

Kaimuki two-sport standout Koby Moananu heading to Oregon State

By Paul Honda on April 29, 2021

All Koby Moananu wanted was an opportunity. He is getting one at Oregon State. The Beavers football program extended a Preferred Walk On spot to the Kaimuki senior just two days after Utah made a similar offer. Moananu opted for Oregon State, where he plans to try out for the baseball team, too. “I committed to them on Monday. They sent the graphic today and I sent it to coach David,” he said, referring to Kaimuki football coach David Tautofi. […]

Kaimuki junior QB Jayden Maiava heading to Elite 11

By Paul Honda on October 12, 2020

The Elite 11 regional in Portland, Ore. is not common territory. When Tua Tagovailoa of Saint Louis went to his first Elite 11, the competition with top quarterbacks from across the region, then the West Coast, then nationally, put him on the biggest radar. Jayden Maiava of Kaimuki is hoping to expand his scope. The 6-foot-5, 222-pound junior will travel to the Oct. 25 event with Campbell junior Blaine Hipa. Their personal coach, Keli‘i Tilton, will accompany them. “The exciting […]

ON THIS DATE (1962): Charley Wedemeyer makes the difference for Punahou

By Jerry Campany on September 28, 2020

Some coaches call special teams play a third of the game, but on this day in 1962 it was so much more for Punahou. The Buffanblu were outgained 306-67 but still managed to beat Kaimuki 13-12 on this date in 1962 at Honolulu Stadium. Future Star-Bulletin sports editor Bill Kwon and Punahou coach Dave Eldredge called it luck. Charley Wedemeyer‘s and Clint Albao‘s presence made it anything but. Wedemeyer took the opening kickoff 84 yards for a score and the […]

ON THIS DATE: Kaimuki soccer star Sirideth Lanpouthakoun rescues football team

By Jerry Campany on September 17, 2020

On this date in 1982, Laotian soccer prodigy Sirideth Lanpouthakoun booted a 24-yard field goal with 3:32 left to help Kaimuki over Kahuku 3-0 at Roosevelt. A 24-yard chip shot would normally be no big deal, but Lanpouthakoun missed his previous two attempts (from 27 and 41 yards) in the defensive struggle. Michael Taamilo was a beast for Kaimuki against Kahuku’s formidible offense. He had three tackles for losses and helped hold quarterback Lane Santiago to 32 passing yards and […]

By Paul Honda on August 7, 2020

Not one, not two, not three… but 15. Fifteen Friday mornings in a row, the Kaimuki Bulldogs football team and families have shown up to distribute food boxes to the community. “There’s usually three or four guys in a group. In the boxes, there’s laulau, Portuguese sausage, pipikaula,” three-sport senior Koby Moananu said. “A lot of meats,” Tony Stevens added. “I think people just come out, not because they need it, but because maybe other people need it. They give […]
