Kaimuki forfeits football opener against Radford

By Paul Honda on October 13, 2021

The football season opener between Kaimuki and Radford has been forfeited by Kaimuki. The game had been scheduled for Saturday at Farrington’s Skippa Diaz Stadium. OIA football coordinator Harold Tanaka confirmed that a low number of eligible players is the reason for the forfeiture. In years past, the league generally has used 25 as a threshold number for small rosters. “They’re going to be fine,” Tanaka said. “It’s just this week.” New coach Reid Yoshikawa stepped in after the school […]

Kaimuki releases former state coach of the year David Tautofi

By Paul Honda on September 17, 2021

The David Tautofi era has ended at Kaimuki. In a press release from the coach’s Kaimuki Youth Development Organization, Tautofi stated that he was released as head football coach on Aug. 31 by school administrators. Kaimuki’s team has struggled with roster numbers for years, but never ceased to battle for playoff berths and titles. In five seasons on the field under the former Kaimuki and UCLA defensive lineman, the Bulldogs were 37-19 in Division II play. That includes a runner-up […]

Kahuku DC Sola Soliai recalls excellent adventures with late Matt Faga

By Paul Honda on August 10, 2021

The first time Sola Soliai met Matt Faga, it was two alpha dogs sizing each other up. Soliai was an assistant at Kaimuki back in 2007. Kaimuki was in the process of searching for an additional defensive line coach. “Practice starts. We’re running a drill with the D-line. Here comes this huge guy from the parking lot wearing a red shirt. I’m telling the D-line something, Matt walks on the field with his mad dog face, and I’m who the […]

Former Kaimuki Bulldog recalls transformation from player to coach under late Matt Faga

By Paul Honda on August 8, 2021

It took no time for Matt Faga to walk from the highest level of the game back to his roots. Faga died on Saturday at 39, a victim of COVID-19 complications. The football community, from Kaimuki to Kaiser to Kahuku, remains in disbelief. He was an assistant coach at Kahuku under head coach Sterling Carvalho and defensive coordinator Sola Soliai, mentoring and guiding young players with the Rebel Squad in the offseason. The former Kaimuki and Hawaii standout defensive tackle […]

Endurance, eligibility are huge keys for Kaimuki’s ironmen

By Paul Honda on June 24, 2021

The 18 Bulldogs showing up daily for conditioning know the task is daunting. Such is the way at Kaimuki, where low numbers, big hearts and ultimate resilience have been the norm for years. Coach David Tautofi has lined up scrimmages with Kahuku, Campbell, Kailua and Saint Louis — not exactly an easy route for any program, let alone one in Division II. Tautofi’s approach has yielded big dividends for the Bulldogs. In 2019, they won the OIA D-II title and […]

By Paul Honda on June 13, 2021

In the most challenging of years, the senior class found ways to succeed. The HHSAA Hall of Honor’s class of 2021 is now inducted, and with a formalized quota system in place, more Neighbor Island and OIA candidates landed in the Hall than usual. Class of 2021 Teani Arakawa, King Kekaulike (Soccer, Cross Country, Track and Field) Kanani Araki, Kamehameha-Hawai’i (Air Riflery, Swimming, Track and Field) Alana Barthel, Le Jardin (Swimming) Cayla Cabanban, Sacred Hearts (Cheerleading) Alaka’i Gonsalves, Kapa’a (Basketball, […]

Kaimuki three-sport standout Koby Moananu enters Hawaii Hall of Honor

By Paul Honda on June 2, 2021

An unexpected and wonderful thing happened as Koby Moananu pondered his future during a global pandemic. Question marks, cancellation of his sports — baseball, then football and, finally, basketball — generated maximum concern for the talented senior. Then, after a rough baseball season for the Kaimuki Bulldogs, Moananu learned that he had been voted into the Hawaii Hall of Honor. “I feel like it’s a huge honor to be in the Hall. My parents always kept me focused and helped […]

Kaimuki two-sport standout Koby Moananu heading to Oregon State

By Paul Honda on April 29, 2021

All Koby Moananu wanted was an opportunity. He is getting one at Oregon State. The Beavers football program extended a Preferred Walk On spot to the Kaimuki senior just two days after Utah made a similar offer. Moananu opted for Oregon State, where he plans to try out for the baseball team, too. “I committed to them on Monday. They sent the graphic today and I sent it to coach David,” he said, referring to Kaimuki football coach David Tautofi. […]
