Mililani limits Kahuku to lowest output in OIA since 2014

By Paul Honda on November 3, 2018

The roller coaster doesn’t end for the Kahuku Red Raiders. For Mililani, the blend of experimental laboratory and tough-nosed fundamentals continue well into Coach Rod York’s ninth season. Kahuku’s 27-7 loss to Mililani in the OIA Open championship game on Friday night at Aloha Stadium was, in many ways, a sequel to the first meeting between the teams. In their first matchup, Mililani prevailed 38-10 on Kahuku’s homecoming despite muddy terrain and the home team’s 51-game win streak at Carleton […]

Mililani, Kahuku continue OIA dominance

By Jerry Campany on November 2, 2018

For the 11th consecutive season, and 15th time in the last 16 years, the OIA top-tier football championship will go to either Kahuku or Mililani. If last year’s tussle is any indication, the game might go down to the wire. If it does, it will be a rarity. The big game in the public schools had been largely decided in blowouts since 2010, with the closest margin of victory being 13 twice before last year’s 35-31 Kahuku victory. Before that, […]

The 2019 Polynesian Bowl will take place Saturday, Jan. 19. A total of 24 players currently at Hawaii high […]

VIDEO: No. 5 Kahuku shuts down No. 4 Campbell

By Paul Honda on October 27, 2018

The rematch between fifth-ranked Kahuku and fourth-ranked Campbell turned out much differently in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Open Division semifinals. The Red Raiders sacked Campbell quarterback Kaniela Kalaola four times and turned two interceptions into touchdowns by Peter John Mataira and Ilaesa Fotu in the second quarter en route to a 27-7 victory.

Inspired Red Raiders get payback in Ewa Beach

By Paul Honda on October 27, 2018

Four sacks. Two pick-sixes. No. 5 Kahuku’s 27-7 win over No. 4 Campbell, on the same field where the Red Raiders lost three weeks earlier, had all the makings of a traditionally dominant defense making an elite-level comeback. It was, at the prep level, the rough equivalent of the Baltimore Ravens putting a muzzle on the New Orleans Saints. “Our athletes are coming around, you know. They’re making plays. That’s what the heartbeat of our team is, our defense right […]
