Kauai facing another uphill climb

By Nick Abramo on August 12, 2014

A lot of attention went to the Kaiser football team a year ago, and deservedly so. The Cougars won the Division II state title, after all. It’s kind of a foggy memory now, but a neighbor-island team came close to upsetting them in the final game, and that fact gets kind of lost in the media hubbub that swirled around Kaiser throughout the 2013 season and beyond. Yes, Kauai High was locked into a 7-7 tie with the Cougars to […]

8-man football hits the Big Island

By Paul Honda on August 10, 2014

While the Maui Interscholastic League enters its fourth season of 8-man football — its second year as a championship sport — another league has adopted the game. Ka‘u athletic director Kalei Namohala confirmed that the Big Island Interscholastic Federation is ready to kick off in the sport this fall. Unlike the MIL, there won’t be a full season of experimentation by participating teams — the minimum number of entries necessary to qualify a championship sport. Ka‘u, Kohala and Pahoa will […]

All-State football, 1972-present

By Jerry Campany on August 8, 2014

During the Star-Advertiser’s countdown of the top 10 teams in preseason we have been publishing each team’s first-team All-State players. Now it is time for every school’s greatest heroes. The first All-State team was published by the Honolulu Advertiser in 1972 and the Star-Bulletin followed with its first team in 1977, satisfied with publishing only all-league teams during that span using the rational that they hadn’t seen enough neighbor-island teams to accurately choose the best. The Star-Bulletin did give out […]

No. 2 Mililani All-State football

By Jerry Campany on August 6, 2014

Every year is the year of the Trojan. Mililani, for long an also-ran in state football, has had a player selected first team All-State every year since 2002. That is the longest active streak. Kahuku’s string stretched to 1997 before being shut out last year. The Trojans started their run in 2003 when Mikhail Mabry and Sene Ma’afala were selected and might have reached its peak last year with six selections. KK Padello led the way for the Trojans with […]

No. 4 Kamehameha All-State football

By Jerry Campany on August 4, 2014

The power running game is back at Kamehameha. Coach Doug Cosbie‘s smashmouth system was successful last year, but injuries forced him to split carries between Brandon Kahookele and Kainoa Simao, leaving them shut out of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s first team when All-State selections were announced. Looking back on selections of the past, having a 9-2 Kamehameha team virtually assures a spot among the elite. The Warriors have not had a running back on the first team since Ryan Ho in […]

No. 9 Leilehua All-State football

By Jerry Campany on July 30, 2014

Plenty of talent has moved through Wahiawa over the years, led by running back Adrian Murrell. The NFL veteran was first-team All-State three years in a row by the Honolulu Advertiser, the first to be so honored. Waianae’s Kennedy Tulimasealii, Kahuku’s Aofaga Wily, Castle’s Blaze Soares and Gerald Welch of Saint Louis are the only other 3-time first-team all state players. But no position has been as consistently good for the school as quarterback. Andrew Manley was among the best […]

Hall of Honor inductees since 1983

By Jerry Campany on May 31, 2014

The HHSAA Hall of Honor will induct its newest class on Sunday at the Ala Moana Hotel, bringing the number athletes immortalized to 384, with 230 boys and 154 girls inducted. This is the fourth time an equal number of boys and girls were inducted and girls have outnumbered boys since 2007. There have been 51 different schools represented over the years now that Hanalani joined the party with Sarah Liva going in. The OIA leads the way with 20 […]

Long ball lacking at the Les

By Jerry Campany on May 16, 2014

When the power went out on the UH campus during Thursday’s Divsion II semifinal between Waianae and Kamehameha-Hawaii, the only real inconvenience was keeping track of how many runs the Warriors were piling on the wounded Seariders. But fans who had taken in the show the previous two days probably didn’t mind. The Division II schools showed off some offense that was lacking in the first two days on the UH Manoa campus. Both Division II finalists, Kamehameha-Hawaii and Maryknoll, […]
