Every year is the year of the Trojan.
Mililani, for long an also-ran in state football, has had a player selected first team All-State every year since 2002. That is the longest active streak. Kahuku’s string stretched to 1997 before being shut out last year.
The Trojans started their run in 2003 when Mikhail Mabry and Sene Ma’afala were selected and might have reached its peak last year with six selections. KK Padello led the way for the Trojans with the school’s first-ever defensive player of the year award.
Sene Ma’afala is Mililani’s only player to earn first-team All-State two years in a row, but Vavae Malepeai is set to join him.
How far have the Trojans come? Coach Rod York, a first-teamer for ‘Iolani in 1990, has congratulated nine different players for being deemed elite at their position in his four years, matching the number of first-team All-State players James Millwood had in his 13 years at the helm with two newspapers selecting teams. York has had only one newspaper to deal with.
Darnell Arceneaux had three first teamers in his three years, Stanford Kawana and legendary John Kauinana each had one.
