‘Iolani to ‘remember Eddie Hamada’

Legendary ‘Iolani coach and athletic director Eddie Hamada will be the topic of a talk story event hosted by the ‘Iolani Athletics Club on June 8. A panel of former players, coaches, faculty members and friends will share memories and life lessons learned by Hamada, who died in 2010. Many proposals will be on tap at HIADA

It’s possible Hawaii girls water polo will have a Division II tournament if a proposal to create one passes at the Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors convention on the Big Island next week. The HIADA voting body, made up of all of the state’s high school athletic directors, will decide on whether to create an eight-team D-II state event when they meet June 5-9 at the Hilton Waikoloa Village. MIL enjoys banner year

The Maui Interscholastic League came to play at the state level this school year. The league took as many team championships as it ever had with seven, four of them coming from the girls. The MIL’s previous high was four each in 2013-14 and 2015-16 and had won at least three every year since 2012 when it had one. 2017 Hall of Honor class announced

The HHSAA elected its newest class of the Hall of Honor on Monday, bringing the total of legendary athletes to 420, split between 249 boys and 171 girls. Honorees receive a $2,000 scholarship from Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Navy football coach and Radford graduate Ken Niumatalolo will be the featured speaker at the induction banquet set for June 4 at the Pomaika’i Ballroom at Dole Cannery. Here are the newest members:

UH report documents 321 football concussions

A report to the 2017 legislature dated in November 2016 studied the number of concussions suffered by high school athletes. It came after a law was signed by Governor David Ige last July involving concussion monitoring and educational programs involving concussion testing for high school athletes. Kahuku a finalist in fans’ spirit contest

The unmatched spirit of Kahuku Red Raider fans is being put to the test. There’s $25,000 of prize money for the school at stake. Varsity Brands is conducting an online contest for finalists Kahuku, Bingham (Utah), Broken Arrow (Okl.) and El Toro (Calif.). Voters must register at the Varsity Brands site and can vote for their favorite school once per day until Mar. 15. Click here to vote.
