Red Raiders repeat

By Jerry Campany on November 6, 2009

. By Paul Honda phonda@starbulletin.com Special teams, special forces. All things being equal, Kahuku won the battle in special teams over Leilehua on Friday night, providing enough firepower for a 24-20 win and the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference title. From Cameron Mercado’s game-opening kickoff into the end zone — one of five touchbacks by the Red Raider specialist — to Leilehua’s first punt nearly being blocked, Kahuku was in big-play mode all night. Eventually, Johnny Tupola got through and […]

King Kamehameha

By Jerry Campany on November 5, 2009

By Paul Honda phonda@starbulletin.com Five years is a pretty long time. In Kamehameha football, it might as well be animal years. You know, one human year is seven years for an animal, like a dog. At least, that’s how Kamehameha alums see it. No, there’s no written code on how many years are permitted to pass without an Interscholastic League of Honolulu football title … but hang around with enough Warrior fans and you’ll know: five years is too long […]

Kamehameha keeps going

By Jerry Campany on November 1, 2009

By Billy Hull But behind the gritty running of tailback Ryan Ho, the second-ranked Warriors made sure it’ll take two losses to the Buffanblu to end their hopes of an Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I title. Ho ran for 147 yards and scored two touchdowns in the final 6 minutes as Kamehameha defeated No. 7 Saint Louis 21-7 last night at Aloha Stadium. Kamehameha (9-1, 6-1) owns a one-game lead over Punahou, which it will play on Thursday in […]

Kahuku comes through

By Jerry Campany on October 30, 2009

. Leilehua 9, Farrington 7 Andrew Manley completed 15 of 23 passes for 175 yards and Kamana Akagi had eight catches for 124 yards and a touchdown as the Mules defeated the Governors. Leilehua advances to play Kahuku next week for the OIA championship. The two teams have combined to win the last six OIA titles, with the Red Raiders owning five of them. Leilehua’s only win came in 2007, during Manley’s sophomore season. The Mules went on to win […]

‘Iolani photo tour

By Jerry Campany on October 30, 2009

‘Iolani looked like the team to beat in the ILH when it rolled over defending champion Punahou at Eddie Hamada Field in Sept. The Raiders came down to earth when they were shut out Saint Louis a week later, but for one day ‘Iolani gave their fans plenty to cheer for. [showtime]

Farrington photo tour

By Jerry Campany on October 25, 2009

When Kahuku visited Farrington at Roosevelt this season, the game was scheduled to take place at Aloha Stadium to accomodate the large crowd that included the Governor. But it was homecoming and Farrington didn’t want to give up its adopted home field, giving the Roosevelt campus its loudest crowd of the season. Paul Honda arrived early to soak in the atmosphere.
