SuperConference? Just be glad for a state tourney

By Jerry Campany on July 24, 2010

The scales are extremely unbalanced — public schools are poorer than ever in many ways, and the rich got richer. It’s not Punahou’s fault, to be sure. Someone had to be at the top of the food chain. I

Chun: ‘D-III will happen one day’

By Paul Honda on June 13, 2010

Fiscal responsibility is utmost in Chris Chun’s mind. The attorney-turned-executive director of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association made it through the busy spring season and this week’s athletic directors conference with renewed energy. He’s got little time to digest the proposals that passed the Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association conference before they go up for vote before the HHSAA’s executive board on Monday morning. Without the HHSAA’s approval, no HIADA proposal is enacted. It’s happened often times before: three […]

MIL, BIIF spoke loud and clear

By Paul Honda on June 13, 2010

The groundswell had been building, all right. So had the ammunition. The Maui Interscholastic League and Big Island Interscholastic Federation were outnumbered, but not outgunned when discussion on the open floor ensued on Friday, the final day of the Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association conference. The cool air-conditioning of the ballroom at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Hotel belied the intensity of thoughts and exchange on a few issues. The load wasn’t large; several battles offered by the neighbor islands were […]

More on PIAA Combine

By Jerry Campany on May 31, 2010

If you liked Saturday’s story on the Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance football combine, here’s more. > > > Saint Louis, with new coach Darnell Arceneaux, will add the multiple-look sets that he favors. Among them will be some conventional sets that will make use of tight ends and fullbacks. Like Saint Louis’ Marcus Mariota, Mililani quarterback Trent McKinney was at the combine. McKinney was among nearly a dozen Trojans there, several hours before their spring football season ended with an intrasquad […]

8 may be great in MIL football

By Jerry Campany on May 22, 2010

Among the proposals to be offered at the upcoming Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association conference is a layout for 8-man football. Seabury Hall athletic director Steve Colflesh has worked with the Maui Interscholastic League on a three-year plan that would begin with baby steps. For two years, the league could operate 8-man football as a pass league with teams from Seabury Hall, St. Anthony and Molokai. By year 3, the programs would make the adjustment to full pads and helmets […]

More on new Saint Louis coach Darnell Arceneaux

By Jerry Campany on May 1, 2010

Earlier this morning, the original story about Saint Louis’ pursuit of Darnell Arceneaux was posted here. Back on Monday, I interviewed him for a story that was later pulled at his request, and never ran. Now that he’s returning as football coach at Saint Louis, leaving Mililani after four seasons, here’s more of what he contemplated on Monday. He spoke as he coached his son Cole’s basketball team at practice that afternoon. Darnell Arceneaux: “For me, the biggest thing is, if […]
