Darnell Arceneaux: Crossroads for a wanted coach

By Jerry Campany on May 1, 2010

It was back on Monday that word got out about Darnell Arceneaux. It was his alma mater, Saint Louis, that wanted him to be their football coach. Badly. Here’s what I wrote at the time. It didn’t run in Tuesday’s newspaper, though. That Monday night, Coach had deep reservations about allowing the news to be published — he didn’t want to hurt anyone on either side (Mililani and Saint Louis). He had his family to think of, how he and […]

Crusaders hire from within: More on Paola

By Jerry Campany on April 7, 2010

More on Saint Louis’ hiring of new athletic director Ed Paola. Paola is relishing the opportunity to move into a new direction. His background as an athlete, coach and soldier isn’t unique, but his energy as a teacher may be. In the classroom, he made it a personal goal to make science fun for students. “I’m very familiar with all of it,” he said of student-athletes and coaches. “Sports, if done right, can make any school stronger, everywhere. But what’s […]

Aloha, Word of Life

By Paul Honda on March 23, 2010

There aren’t many schools that have produced as much talent on the gridiron and the hardwood as tiny Word of Life Academy did. The school announced today that it will close its doors at the conclusion of this school year. I got word of it last night while covering boys volleyball at Punahou. It wasn’t a total shock; talk of WOLA’s financial struggles had gone on for a few months. Those of us who know their coaches and student-athletes could […]

Kahuku LOI Day: Jamora, Schwenke, Kaka

By Jerry Campany on February 3, 2010

The outgoing crop of football talent at Kahuku isn’t large this season, but there’s plenty of quality. Hauoli Jamora and Jackson Kaka made good on their initial commitments this morning. Jamora, the Star-Bulletin defensive player of the year, followed through and signed with Washington. Kaka inked his pact with New Mexico State. Meanwhile, Kona Schwenke finalized his agreement with Notre Dame, the late pursuer that put a twist into the recruiting puzzle. Schwenke originally committed to BYU, but other offers […]

LOI Day, mainland signees: Akuna, Fehoko, Ioane end drama

By Jerry Campany on February 3, 2010

Paul Honda made the rounds on letter of intent day, snapping photos of the athletes as they signed papers indicating where they would go to college. [showtime] . By Paul Honda They needed a little more time, but the final three commitments by elite Hawaii high school football prospects were signed in ink this morning at the Sheraton Waikiki. The signing event, hosted by Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance, drew about 75 student-athletes: mostly football players, but also including soccer players […]

By Jerry Campany on January 22, 2010

National high school football recruiting guru Tom Lemming returned to the islands to meet with many of the state’s top underclassmen on Dec. 11 at Kapolei High School. Players were interviewed on camera and filled out information forms for Lemmings, who hosts a TV show and is known as the source for national football recruiting. Photos by Paul Honda. . . Tautofi: Leavin’ Las Vegas?

By Jerry Campany on December 18, 2009

By Paul Honda Well, since the proverbial “cat’s out of the bag” at this point — another media source has noted that former Kaimuki athlete Desmond Tautofi may return from Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) soon — let’s discuss. I first got wind of Desmond’s possible return a few weeks ago. (So why not bring it up then? Remember, this is prep sports. When it comes to transfers and off-court issues, it’s usually best to leave it alone unless or until […]

Mainland wins again

By Jerry Campany on December 13, 2009

By Paul Honda For three quarters, the best of Hawaii and Polynesia kept the nation’s No. 1 running back under check.   Unfortunately, while Lache Seastrunk took awhile to find paydirt, teammate Deuce Coon had no trouble, catching three touchdown passes as the Mainland All-Stars pulled away from Hawaii/Polynesia for a 26-6 win Saturday night at Aloha Stadium.    It was the second victory in as many tries for the visitors in two years. This time, Hawaii/Poly fared well against […]
