Update: Punahou 24, Kamehameha 0, final

By Paul Honda on September 14, 2013

8:02 p.m. We’re a few minutes away from kickoff. Kamehameha in navy blue jerseys, pants and helmets. Punahou in white jerseys, pants and blue helmet. Good crowd here at Aloha Stadium. Canton Kaumatule looked good in pre-game warmups. 8:10 p.m. Punahou misses two opportunities: Larry Tuileta missed a wide-open receiver at the pylon, and was just a bit off on a screen pass to Kotoni Sekona on a big blitz by Kamehameha. Charles McDonald was short on a 47-yard field-goal […]

Update: Saint Louis 49, ‘Iolani 13, final

By Paul Honda on September 14, 2013

5:09 p.m. We’re about 4 minutes away from kickoff for No. 3 Saint Louis and No. 10 ‘Iolani. They have quite a history together. 5:21 p.m. Keoni-Kordell Makekau’s 30-yard field goal gives ‘Iolani a 3-0 lead with 9:39 to go in the first quarter. 5:28 p.m. Crusaders are in hurry-up mode and drive to the ‘Iolani 8-yard line before stalling. On fourth down, they go for it rather than kick a field goal, which leads to a fumble by Ryder […]

Update: Damien 34, St. Francis 14, final

By Paul Honda on September 14, 2013

1:59 p.m. Just a minute away from kickoff between Damien and St. Francis. This is a competitive Monarchs team despite players who have transferred out, plus some early-season academic casualties. Syles Choy is a seasoned, solid quarterback. St. Francis has been hit by injuries. I count 25 suited up in uniform. This is a life lesson for them, this inaugural season in varsity football. If they can make it through this schedule — D-I giants Kamehameha, Punahou and Saint Louis […]

Kaiser, Kalani set records

By Billy Hull on September 14, 2013

The quality of football on Oahu’s East side has increased dramatically in the last two years with former UH coaches Rich Miano at Kaiser and both Ron and Cal Lee handling coordinator duties under Greg Taguchi at Kalani. Friday night, the two schools put up a record number of points in big wins. Over at Kaiser Stadium, the Cougars atoned for their stunning loss to Nanakuli in the semifinals of last year’s OIA White playoffs with a 70-20 blowout of […]

Kapolei leaves Leilehua stunned

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 14, 2013

From beginning to end, it was simply a weird and wild night in Wahiawa. The weirdness started in warmups when a power outage knocked out the lights at Hugh Yoshida Stadium. The night ended with a wild Kapolei comeback in the fourth quarter as the Hurricanes scored 35 unanswered points in a 48-27 win over host Leilehua to pick up their third straight win. About an hour after the game and back on the Kapolei campus, Hurricanes head coach Darren […]

From the NFL to the ILH

By Dave Reardon on September 14, 2013

An interesting sidebar to tonight’s big game is that both head coaches are former NFL players. Punahou’s Kale Ane was a center who specialized in long-snapping for the Kansas City Chiefs from 1975 to 1980 and with the Green Bay Packers in 1981. Kamehameha’s Doug Cosbie played tight end for the Dallas Cowboys from 1979 to 1988. Ane doesn’t recall matching wits as a head coach previously against a fellow NFL alumnus. “I think I came back to Punahou after […]

Update: Campbell 32, Waianae 24, final

By Paul Honda on September 13, 2013

4:58 p.m. Nothing like beating traffic and getting situated early. The old pressbox at Campbell is open after a one-year hiatus. Always good for old reporters to take cover in case the rain falls. That would mess up the notebook, laptop and video camera. Expecting a good battle between No. 6 Waianae and No. 8 Campbell. Two savvy, talented and mobile quarterbacks against stellar defenses. Varsity kickoff is in about two-plus hours. 7:34 p.m. Final score of the JV game […]

Pupule’s ballot: Still 1a and 1b

By Paul Honda on September 13, 2013

This may seem manic or chaotic or just wishy-washy, but here goes. I voted Kamehameha No. 1 on my ballot for the Star-Advertiser Prep Football Top 10 this week. Yet, I expect Punahou to win on a last-minute field goal against the Warriors tonight. Say whuhhh… It’s like this. The Warriors, my opinion, have proven to be worth of the top spot by virtue of five wins, almost all against elite competition. Punahou deserves the spot, too, but until we […]
