Update: Campbell 32, Waianae 24, final

4:58 p.m.
Nothing like beating traffic and getting situated early. The old pressbox at Campbell is open after a one-year hiatus. Always good for old reporters to take cover in case the rain falls. That would mess up the notebook, laptop and video camera.

Expecting a good battle between No. 6 Waianae and No. 8 Campbell. Two savvy, talented and mobile quarterbacks against stellar defenses. Varsity kickoff is in about two-plus hours.

7:34 p.m.
Final score of the JV game was Campbell 12, Waianae 7. Varsity about to kick off. They’re tossing the coin at mid-field. Waianae will receive.


8:33 p.m.
A fumble on the kickoff return by Campbell was recovered by Waianae, and Mahvan Tau scored on a 1-yard run to give the visiting Seariders a 17-7 lead with 1:13 left in the half.

At the half, it’s 17-7.

Both teams fumbled away early possessions. Campbell stopped the Seariders at the 1-yard line on their opening drive.

The Sabers struck first with an 11-yard keeper by Isaac Hurd fo a touchdown with 9:57 left in the second quarter.

Moments later, Waianae scored on a 52-yard pass from Kekoa Kaluhiokalani to Pookela Noa-Nakamoto to tie the game.

A leaping interception by Niko Kala-Mahiai in the end zone gave the ball back to the Seariders, who then drove 79 yards before settling for an 18-yard field goal by Noa-Nakamoto to take a 10-7 lead with 2:29 to go in the first half.


A fumble on the ensuing kick return by Campbell was recovered by the Seariders at the Sabers’ 12-yard line. Three plays later, Tau punched it in from the 1.

9:04 p.m.
Hurd tries to sneak in on fourth-and-1, but finds a seam and scores on an 11-yard run to bring the Seariders within 17-13 with 6:28 left in the third. The PAT snap is high, holder sacked.

9:14 p.m.
Seariders answer with another touchdown drive. They smashmouth it downfield with their option game, then Kaluhiokalani finds Noa-Nakamoto for a 12-yard touchdown pass. Waianae leads 24-13 with 2:45 to go in the third.

9:22 p.m.
Campbell scores immediately on an 80-yard bomb from Hurd to Keola Himan, making it 24-19 with 1:50 left in the third quarter. The PAT snap is off-target again.

9:32 p.m.
Waianae’s punt snap sails high for the second time tonight. Instead of a recovery and punt, punter Stanton Spencer fumbles the ball in the end zone and the Sabers recover for a go-ahead touchdown. The punter could’ve just taken a safety, but tried the fumble the ball forward.

Campbell leads 25-24 with 9:38 remaining.


9:45 p.m.
Spencer’s 43-yard field goal try misses left. Campbell regains possession with 4:28 to play.

9:56 p.m.
Sabers score on a 26-yard TD pass from Hurd to Himan with 1;01 left for a 32-24 lead, giving Waianae one last chance to score and tie it. But Campbell picks off a late, deep pass inside the 10. Campbell wins.
